Academic interests

I am a historian of the early and central Middle Ages, with research interests in Viking Age and Medieval Scandinavia, specifically Norway in the Middle Ages, the Carolingians, and the Hanseatic League. My current research focuses on Viking Age Scandinavia with special regard to a comparison of cultural contacts in the North Sea area. Especially the contemporary historiography of Francia, Ireland and the Anglo-Saxon England and their scribal network and description of Scandinavia and the Scandinavians are of particular interest for my research. For the majority of texts, annals and early chronicles from these areas constitute the corpus I investigate for information, as well as diplomata and poetry.

Background

I started my academic path as an undergraduate student in History, Scandinavian Studies, and Cultural Anthropology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main in Germany, where I also had my first minor teaching experience as a tutor for Old Norse, as well as being able to participate in planning, conceptualizing, and presenting a museum exhibition. After completing my BA, I did my MPhil/MA in a joint degree at the Universities of Iceland and Oslo, graduating with my thesis about the image of early medieval Scandinavia. For this master's program, I received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
