  The author proposes to edit the first recension of Gratian’s Decretum on the basis of the seven known witnesses to that recension in addition to about six second-recension manuscripts selected to capture as many variants as possible. The formal source(s) must also be collated. Given that the manuscript tradition of the work is greatly contaminated and thus impossible to analyze stemmatically, the editorial work must focus on working out the relationship among textual variants rather than among codices.

  The Decretum Gratiani is the cornerstone of medieval canon law, and the manuscript St Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, 673 an essential witness to its evolution. The studies in this volume focus on that manuscript, providing critical insights into its genesis, linguistic features, and use of Roman Law, while evaluating its attraction to medieval readers and modern scholars. Together, these studies offer a fascinating view on the evolution of the Decretum Gratiani, as well as granting new insights on the complex dynamics and processes by which legal knowledge was first created and then transferred in medieval jurisprudence.   När Matts Gustafsson år 1374 dödade Linköpingsbiskopen Gottskalk Falkdal fick det förstås rättsliga följder. Genom att bära hand på en medlem av det andliga ståndet drog Matts på sig automatisk bannlysning enligt en nyskapande lag från Andra Laterankonciliet (1139). Domkapitlet i Linköping, som leddes av den kyrkorättsligt utbildade Nils Hermansson, vidtog lämpliga åtgärder för att låta allmänheten veta att så hade skett. Fem år efter brottet förlikade Matts sig med kyrkan i Linköping genom en stor donation, men han borde dessförinnan ha förlåtits av påven, om vi räknar med att kyrkorättens regler följts. Att han var botfärdig signalerade Matts genom att skaffa en ny sigillstamp där hans heraldiska vapen vänts upp och ned. I föredraget kommer jag att se närmare på flera av de handlingar som finns bevarade om brottet och dess följder, och diskutera den kanoniska rätt som gällde i sammanhanget.
