This chapter is about the background, context, and reception of Christian Krohg’s Leiv Eiriksson Discovering America (1893). Krohg’s painting was made for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, but was drawn into a heated public debate about art and colonialism in Norway in 2023 when the then director of exhibitions and collections at Norway’s National Museum called it a colonial painting. The focus of the article will be on the painting competition in Kristiania and the exhibition in Chicago, but the author also traces the painting’s life story, its cultural biography, and its specific social life from the 1890s till today. The work is placed in a broad visual and material culture that moves from Norway to the United States and back again. The chapter shows how Krohg’s painting is part of a settler colonial mythology and an ideology of whiteness. The author also introduces an alternative reading of the painting where it is claimed to represent an “ironic” nationalism.

This article is about the Swedish daily comic strip Rocky by Martin Kellerman. The article views Rocky as an example of autofiction due to Kellerman’s use of an anthropomorphic cartoon self and the daily comic strip’s narrative structure. One of the article’s goals is to show how the daily comic strip as a medium creates an original day-to-day space for exploring a life story.

This collective interdisciplinary work on the landscape art from prehistory to the present day is made up of fourteen essays presented in three thematic sections (« The Human Being and his Environment », « The Experience of the Imaginary », « Spaces and Artistic Confrontations »). It brings together contributions from thirteen international researchers and specialists, to decipher what was at stake in debates old and new, and analysing the mass of information available today regarding the polymorphic idea of the landscape. It aims to discern the approaches and the works, the concepts and the periods, the disciplines and the countries, the subjects and the designs, with the goal of presenting new insights. The chronological approach on which this is based hopefully brings an understanding of the extent of successive changes that, before and after Christianisation, affected the perception, the appropriation, the experience of the everyday and the representation of the landscape. The fourteen essays are organised by subject and by hierarchy allowing an understanding of their relationships to each other and to an enduring continuity. Each of them presents a study based on a specific case, chosen for its particular significance, and is completed with bibliographical notes to enhance the reader’s understanding. Under the direction of Frank Claustrat (Associate Professor in Contemporary Art History, Paul-Valéry Montpellier III University) and Françoise Pellicer (Associate Professor in Modern Art History, Paul-Valéry Montpellier III University), members of the research unit CRISES (Montpellier, France). Book published with the support of the Paul-Valéry Montpellier III University, the research unit CRISES, and the Hartung-Bergman Foundation, Antibes (France).

The Tache as a Sign in Nineteenth-Century Painting.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
The tache (blot, patch, stain) is a central and recurring motif in visual art, at least from the time of Manet (whose rejection of academic finish produced a surface where the strokes of paint are presented, directly, as patches or blots, then indirectly as legible signs). The potential range of works to be discussed is enormous: the blots of Alexander Cozens; the dots of Seurat and the neo-impressionists; the passages of Cézanne, and the color areas of Matisse; the emergency of an aesthetic of the informe in Surrealism, and later in art brut (Fautrier, Dubuffet) and in Jackson Pollock. Each manifestation of tache-ism generates its own specific cultural effects, and the project intends to ‘read’ each instance closely in the art of Manet, Cézanne, Seurat, Munch, and Matisse. Nevertheless, there is surely something like a shared aesthetic operation that runs across these diverse regions, and this research project focuses for the first time on the tache as a hidden continuum within modern art (1860-1900).
In its methodological framework, drawn from the semiotics of text and image, the project introduces fine-tuning into the classic terms index, symbol, icon. The concept of the tache as a ‘crossing’ of sign-types enables finer distinctions and observations than have been available so far within the Peircean tradition. Since the claim for the tache is that it ‘crosses’ sign-types, the discussion opens on to the whole terrain of interaction between visual art, literature, and philosophy.
