About the group

We operate with an inclusive understanding of and multidisciplinary approach to environmental art. Art in this context includes music, visual arts, design, architecture, landscape architecture, and more.

Members come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, with different traditions, ideas, and methods. What unites us are the things. Or perhaps more precisely, “matter” – that which has physical substance. We study matter that is involved in various types of creative processes.

We work on topics such as the environmental impact of the music industry, natural resources and globalization in early modern art, the role of green spaces in the history of urban design and music, how design regulates the use of extractive materials, etc.

In our view, it is matter which constitutes the binding agent between art and the environment. We also engage with “matter” and “mattering”  as politically inflected traces of value systems and of judgments imposed by powerful stakeholders or existing infrastructures.
