How to carry out fieldwork?
Field work is a good opportunity to take a break from Blindern and gather first-hand information for your Master's thesis.
To apply for a field work grant, you must complete the following steps:
Discuss the fieldwork with your supervisor.
- Going on field work should be relevant to your Master's thesis project, and your supervisor can give you advice on where to carry out your field work.
- Your supervisor is required to confirm that you will be undertaking fieldwork and are entitled to receive support.
Decide where to travel
- If you plan to travel abroad, you must review the travel advisories issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Travel to countries or regions that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against is not permitted, as detailed on the following page: Land med reiseråd - regjeringen.no
- Please ensure you review the Safety abroad - University of Oslo guidelines.
- Before you travel you must submit the statement concerning studies abroad through an electronic form. Funding will not be given by the Department unless the statement has been submitted.
Apply for funding
- You must submit the application for fieldwork support well ahead of your travel date:

Submit your application by the 1st of November for fieldwork in the fall semester.

Submit by the 1st of May for fieldwork in the spring semester.

Consider how to secure the collected data
- When you start planning your fieldwork, you should discuss with your supervisor whether your material will include personal data.

Requirements for fieldwork funding
The trip/conference must be relevant to your Master's thesis and should take place in the same semester that the application is made. You cannot receive this type of funding more than once during your course of study.
Fieldwork grant
The department can grant up to 5000,- NOK for fieldwork.
You are required to cover all expenses related to the fieldwork in advance.
When the fieldwork is complete, you submit an online form that gives you access to the PayMe platform. You will receive a link to the online form in the approval letter.
You must upload receipts and boarding passes in the online form. Documents must be uploaded no later than one month after the trip.
