Background

Anna Chebotarova is a sociologist and a doctoral research fellow at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages at the University of Oslo, Norway. She is engaged in the international project "National values and political reforms in post-Maidan Ukraine" (VALREF). Before joining ILOS she worked as a coordinator of the "Ukrainian Regionalism: a Research Platform" project at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). She is also affiliated with the Center for Urban History in East-Central Europe (Lviv, Ukraine). Anna has graduated from the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Central European University (Budapest).

In February 2024, we marked the tragic second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The attack on Ukrainian cultural identity, along with the looting and destruction of cultural heritage, stands as a crucial aspect of the Russian war strategy. Ukraine's museum and heritage sector has faced significant losses but also demonstrated remarkable resistance and self-organization. Our speakers — directors and curators of three Ukrainian museums — will share their experiences of preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage in extreme circumstances. In conversation with Dr. Lars Rowe, they will reflect on the changing role of museums amidst the war, focusing on the evolving mission to document unfolding history under fire and support affected communities. The event will include short presentations, panel discussions, and a Q&A session. After the discussion, we will screen the documentary about the WWII Museum's expedition to the Kharkiv region shortly after its de-occupation in autumn 2022.

In the first two decades of independence, the development of Ukraine as "a post-Communist but not yet post-Soviet" state was characterised by transformation processes both typical and unique to the region. Yet numerous studies have shown that Ukrainian society has changed significantly after the Euromaidan protests of 2013–14, the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas. The level of societal resilience and resistance to the current Russian invasion has been unprecedented. The lecture will give insights into the impact of protracted and acute Russian military aggression on Ukrainian society and the peculiarities of sociological research in times of war.
