  In Chapter 16, “The Nature of Animality,” Michael Lundblad explores how questions of animal (and human) nature animate the contemporary interdisciplinary fields of posthumanism, multispecies ethnography, science and technology studies, animality studies, and human-animal studies. The chapter examines how animality has long defined how humans think about each other and how rejecting a fundamental distinction between humans and animals enables us to see the intertwined “becomings” of different beings. The chapter constructs a genealogy of prominent theoretical responses to questions about animals and animality by Jacques Derrida, Erica Fudge, and Donna Haraway, among others. Theories of animality, Lundblad demonstrates, challenge how we think about history, periodization, and culture, and breathe new life into old debates within literary studies such as questions of agency, character, and perspective.

  One of the most commercially successful films of all time, Avatar (2009) is a blockbuster hit that provides a good example for investigating how disability and animality are far more intertwined and complicated than they might appear at first glance. We identify key scenes in Avatar in order to explore what we call “companion prosthetics”, in which transhuman and posthuman interactions and becomings have the potential for being more symbiotic, helping to deconstruct simplistic binaries such as able/disabled and human/animal. Different kinds of prosthesis need to be considered, such as the distinction between those with compensatory and augmentative goals, and the possibility for prosthetics to be associated with pleasure at times, rather than simply negative aspects of impairment. Jake’s fantasy-made-“real” of transcending his wheelchair by transforming into his avatar body by the end of the film can be seen as both an example of “narrative prosthesis” and a more interesting alternative. Choosing “companion prosthetics” over a “cure”—particularly in terms of the interspecies relationship required for the Na’vi to fly—has the potential for modelling utopian, posthumanist, and anti-speciesist visions.

  The discipline of literary studies has a long tradition of borrowing the concepts and methods of related disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences, while also itself exerting a significant influence on other disciplines. In this book, 15 literary scholars hailing from five different countries consider these processes of mutual enrichment from various critical perspectives. What is the current state of literary studies, and what does the future of this many-faceted field look like? How can the approach of, or trend within, literary studies that each of these scholars represents contribute to literary studies in general? The chapters of the book are revised versions of papers given in June 2016 at a conference entitled “The Future of Literary Studies” at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Oslo. Demonstrating that literary studies constitutes a remarkably active and strikingly diverse area of study and research, the chapters confirm that the field of literary studies is dynamic and open-minded, receiving impulses from other disciplines yet conscious of the characteristics, demands and possibilities appropriate to a discipline in its own right. The book has an introduction by the editor and an afterword by Frederik Tygstrup, University of Copenhagen.

  Abstract: Disability activists and scholars in disability studies have long been uncomfortable with comparisons between animals and people with disabilities and chronic or terminal illnesses. Given the long history of dehumanizing and animalizing people with disabilities, disability advocacy includes reclaiming the humanity and basic human rights of disabled people. It can therefore be difficult to be confronted with the suggestion that animals are often treated similarly to the ways that people with disabilities have been treated. Recent work in disability studies has nonetheless called for greater engagement with animal studies as a field. But this book argues that certain forms of animal advocacy can lead to greater discomfort than others, including veganism and abolitionist animal rights. The book argues instead for a more nuanced and historically and culturally situated approach, staying with the trouble of what the author calls disanimality, the feeling of discomfort that comes from overly simplistic comparisons. Other forms of animal studies—drawing upon the fields of posthumanism, biopolitics, and animality studies—have better potential for more complex and productive inquiries. While theoretical questions and implications are foregrounded in each chapter, examples are drawn from contemporary U.S. and Anglophone novels, films, and memoirs, each suggesting particular situated sites of disanimality. The book ultimately reveals that closer attention to the ways that disability, illness, and animality meet in these contexts can point toward new ways of developing posthumanist disability, illness, and animal studies, as well as more potential for coalitions between advocacy movements.

  This paper asks how narrative tropes linked to disability and animality are deployed in a work of (extremely) popular fiction, namely the television series Game of Thrones (GoT). While disability and animality are often not theorized together, we argue that their sites of intersection are highly productive. By investigating the tensions and possibilities that arise when disability and animality meet, we seek new insight into how different forms of embodiment and different lives are culturally (de)valued.
