Digital disconnection in third places
Alexandra Kviat examines consumer culture, consumption practices and servicescape design through the lenses of sociology, cultural studies, media studies, and human geography. In this presentation she will talk about disconnection policies in the third places of the Global North, based on a study published in the collection The Analogue Idyll: Disconnection, Detox, and Departure from the Digital World (edited by Alex Taylor, Bristol University Press, 2026)
In their presentation, Kari Spjeldnæs and Gunn Enli will focus on digital connectivity in cultural spaces, such as public libraries and theatres. They explore challenges related to the penetration of digitalisation and prolonged attention. Libraries and theatres offer content that requires continuous attention and a disconnected presence. Thus, they are essential arenas for exploring norms under development in the third space.
