The NGL conference series (previously also known as ICNGL) provides an open forum for linguistic research in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas on Nordic (including Germanic, Finnic, Saamic and Greenlandic) and other languages, including multilingualism. Its main goals are to create and strengthen connections between researchers working on different languages, with different methodological and theoretical approaches.

In early November we held an digital workshop on citizen science and citizen sociolinguistic initiatives. The workshop involved participants from the University of Oslo and international colleagues. The workshop consisted of keynote speeches, shorter invited talks and discussion sessions. Most of the talks were recorded and will be uploaded on this page soon for anyone to view.

The purpose of the round-table is to bring together sociolinguists, classicists and historians who study multilingualism in antiquity and medieval times (Day 1) and in imperial, colonial and postcolonial times (Day 2) and to engage in a dialog about continuities and discontinuities in multilingual practices shaped by conquests, migrations and globalizations.

New times require new skills from linguists working with complex datasets. This 1,5 day workshop addresses some of the current challenges faced by linguists working with diverse qualitative datasets by providing a comprehensive introduction into the use of NVivo.

We will explore what methodologies and concepts can be useful across diverse socio-linguistic and cultural settings in order to enhance our understanding of multilingual writing practices.

When we arrive in a new country, public signs, ads and billboards are often the first form of contact we have with the language and script of the place. At this seminar, we will explore linguistic landscapes in Russia, Norway and beyond.

NoSLiP is a conference for graduate students, organized by graduate students, on behalf of the Norwegian Graduate Researcher School in Linguistics and Philology (LingPhil). The scope of the conference is rather broad, we welcome submissions from all areas of linguistics and philology.

Invited speakers are: Loraine K. Obler (City University of New York) Aditi Lahiri (University of Oxford) Martin Haspelmath (University of Leipzig) Terje Lohndal (Norwegian University of Science and Technology; The Arctic University of Norway)

What does it mean to be involuntarily childless in a society that tends to revolve around children? What happens when becoming a parent is not what one had expected? The event aims to contribute new voices, arguments and different angles of approach to the Norwegian public debate on fertility, family and parenthood.

Hva skjer når familiedrømmen ikke går i oppfyllelse? Denne debattdagen handler om familiehistoriene som ikke fortelles: Opplevelsen av å være ufrivillig barnløs i et samfunn der det meste dreier seg om barn, og når det å bli foreldre ikke blir som forventet. Arrangementet vil bringe fram nye stemmer og argumenter i den norske debatten om fertilitet, familie og foreldreskap.
