Assessing Second Language Skills in Primary and Lower Secondary School (completed)

About the project

Research has shown that the assessment of second language students' language skills and language development is a major challenge for schools and teachers and that there is considerable variation in forms of assessment. In this project we specifically focus on the use of an assessment tool developed by the Directorate of Education, which has reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Teachers' understanding of second language acquisition and assessment practices are investigated by means of interviews, observations and questionnaires. The project also aims through document analysis to consider surveying practice in light of the overall school policy frameworks and curricula.
