  The history of agricultural terraces remains poorly understood due to problems in dating their construction and use. This has hampered broader research on their significance, limiting knowledge of past agricultural practices and the long-term investment choices of rural communities. The authors apply OSL profiling and dating to the sediments associated with agricultural terraces across the Mediterranean region to date their construction and use. Results from five widely dispersed case studies reveal that although many terraces were used in the first millennium AD, the most intensive episodes of terrace-building occurred during the later Middle Ages (c. AD 1100–1600). This innovative approach provides the first large-scale evidence for both the longevity and medieval intensification of Mediterranean terraces.

  During the recent survey and documentation work at and around Kastro Apalirou 7 churches have been documented, 2 inside, and 5 outside the walls in the immediate vicinity of the kastron. This article will present what we now know about three of these churches and their immediate environment, Aghios Giorgos and a small double-aisled church inside Kastro Apalirou and a large extramural church immediately to the southwest of the only gate in the town.1 The three churches discussed here are not only different in location, size and building technique, they have also been documented in quite different ways. Work at Aghios Giorgos was carried out according to standard archaeological documentation strategy on standing building remains, while a small-scale excavation was carried out on the small double-aisled church. The large church outside the Kastro has not yet been possible to study in detail, mainly because building debris covers the entire building, making any detailed study of the masonry, mortar and building technique difficult. These different strategies mean that while we can suggest dating of both construction and collapse for the small double-aisled church, we can only give a relative dating for the different phases in the Aghios Giorgos-complex and not even that for the extramural church. Even though numerous questions still remain concerning all three churches, the following description and discussion will hopefully make these important monuments of Kastro Apalirou more accessible for the scholarly community.

  The poleis on the plain around present-day Tripolis, and particularly Mantineia and Tegea, loom in the ancient sources on Arcadia, and with good reason. Both were important actors in politics and warfare in Greece in the 5th -4 th century BC. There are several reasons for this. Both poleis were located on the easternmost and largest highland plain of Arcadia, which is vital for all communication on the Peloponnese, whether north-south or east-west. But the highland plain was also fertile and could support a large population and this is perhaps the most important factor behind the importance of both Mantineia and Tegea in the historical record.1 This article will focus on Tegea in the southern part of the plain, particularly some key elements concerning the natural environment of great importance for the archaeological record, a reappraisal of the archaeological documentation, and a reevaluation of the longdebated question of when and how state formation and urbanization occurred. © 2018 Unipress Verlag GmbH Graz

  Studiet av antikke byer i Italia forbindes ofte med byene begravet av Vesuv, Pompeii og Herculaneum. Disse byene står utvilsomt i en særstilling på grunn av bevaringstilstanden, men for forskningen er også de bevarte restene av en rekke mindre kjente byer av stor betydning. I sin avhandling for dr. philos. graden Bastion of Empire. The Topography and Archaeology of Cales in the Republican Period, retter Knut Ødegård søkelyset på en av disse byene. Ruinene av Cales ligger ca. 50 km. nord for Napoli, og høyden som byen lå på har kun i begrenset grad vært bebygget etter antikken. En rekke monumenter fra romersk tid er fortsatt bevart over bakken, men svært få utgravninger eller andre undersøkelser har vært utført inntil nylig. Gjennom registrering av de bevarte minnesmerker, studier av arkeologisk materiale knyttet til stedet og analyse av skriftlige kilder fra antikken som nevner byen, tegner Ødegård et bilde av byens historie gjennom dens storhetstid i de siste tre århundrer f. Kr.
