About the group
The group consists of linguists at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages (ILOS) with research interests in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, particularly in German, French, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and Italian, studied in comparison with Norwegian.
Our work is based on data from ILOS’s interactive Foreign Language Portal (IFSP). The portal is an innovative digital tool used in both teaching and research at ILOS. It collects translations of short excerpts from published Norwegian texts produced by foreign language students, native speakers, professional translators, and AI services.
Access to the portal requires Feide login, and it is currently available only to students using it in their courses, and to ILOS staff. However, it is being developed into an empirical resource (text bank) that will be accessible to a wider group of researchers.
The research group grew out of the GAME group (2022–2026), which brought together researchers from ILOS and the Faculty of Humanities (HF) working at the interface of grammar and meaning. The GAME group was a continuation of the SynSem group (2015–2021).
Goal
The aim is to develop new knowledge about syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic issues within and across the various ILOS languages. This will be achieved by analysing translation data from the Foreign Language Portal.
