2023 marks the centenary of Ligeti’s birth, an appropriate moment to take stock of the relevance this composer has in the contemporary world, to assess where he “belongs” today and how our views of his œuvre and our understanding of his position in musical and cultural history have evolved. What do Ligeti and his music have to say to us in our post-postmodernist age? Why do his works still fascinate us so much? This book offers new readings of core compositions such as «Aventures», «Lontano», «Le Grand Macabre», the «Hölderlin Fantasies» and «Galamb borong». It also reassesses the context and reception of Ligeti’s works, including the influence of Romanian music (not least in his childhood), musical life in Hungary between 1945 and 1956, the ways in which his thinking was influenced by his experience of different soundscapes, yet also the surprisingly widespread use of his music in film and TV (beyond the usual suspect). Finally it presents new sources discovered or made available only recently: letters exchanged between Ligeti and Aliute Mecys in 1972, the correspondence between the composer and his publisher Schott, and an extended BBC interview from 1997.

Twentieth-century art music, according to dominant narratives, variously oscillates between extremes of progression and retrospect, and unity and multiplicity. While the music of György Ligeti displays qualities from both ends of these scales, his famously ambiguous rhetoric and references to his ‘third way’ imply a determination to seek out an alternative, innovative ‘middle road’ beyond any such dichotomies. As this chapter will discuss, there are aspects of Ligeti’s music and his creative process that bring a level of substance to his rhetoric. Moreover, the middle road and its manifestation in Ligeti’s music can be traced to the influence of his Hungarian heritage and Béla Bartók in particular, revealing another significant but underexposed narrative in twentieth-century music. I will argue that the influence of Bartók permeates Ligeti’s compositional poetics to a much greater degree than is currently acknowledged. The first reference to the middle road in twentieth-century music appears in a programme note by Schoenberg; the term is used to denote the compromise that he perceives in the retrospective tendencies in Stravinsky’s neoclassical music. These comments are referred to by Adorno in the opening pages of his seminal Philosophy of New Music; however, Adorno’s brief exegesis places the notion of compromise in a different, more favourable light (this aspect of his discussion is, arguably, widely misread). Adorno, in reference to René Leibowitz’s article ‘Béla Bartók, the Possibility of Compromise in Contemporary Music’, acclaims Bartók for pursuing the middle road in a move beyond the inevitability of progressive twelve-note music or retrospective diatonicism into new and innovative territory. Ligeti in turn explores the implications of Leibowitz’s discourse more fully in his own writings, praising the significance of Bartók. Moreover, several of Ligeti’s theoretical texts display underlying affinities with Bartókian tradition, and close archaeological studies of Ligeti’s music indicate the submersed and as yet largely unexplored influence of Bartók across the vast span of his oeuvre.

During the 1960s György Ligeti engaged with Theodor W. Adorno in public discussions and private correspondence, most significantly on ideas presented by Adorno in the lecture ‘Vers une musique informelle’ and developed further in ‘Difficulties’. Their previously unpublished letter correspondence provides a basis from which to examine their interaction, and casts new light on the level of Ligeti’s engagement with Adorno’s musical aesthetics. The study of the interaction between Ligeti and Adorno seeks to address recent calls for investigation into the range and nature of Adorno’s influence on composers and their poetics. Moreover, the implications of Ligeti’s contribution in response to Adorno, particularly in matters of musical form, are of potential significance to the broader analytical and aesthetic discourses on a wide range of repertories and genres to emerge in the late twentieth century.

The Passacaglia finale from György Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre (1974–7, rev. 1996) has been described as a point of stylistic crisis, marking Ligeti's return to more traditional compositional means. Consonances and tonal allusions in the music are regarded as indicative of this retrospective tendency. However, notions of functional hierarchy or even pitch centres do little to explicate the underlying processes that contribute to the sense of perpetual unfurling in the Passacaglia. Contained within the resistance to tonal teleology is a process of differentiation in the pitch material. In this respect, the Passacaglia might be considered a further development in Ligeti's continuing effort to inject process into musical material, albeit with increasing levels of intervallic transparency. I further substantiate this argument by situating the analytical findings in this article in a historical context. Profound transformations in the composition, performance and reception of modernist music have taken place in recent decades. Throughout the history of western vocal music, high notes and high voices have come to signify a range of ideas that don’t seem at first to be issues of gender but which very rapidly turn out to be gendered spaces. From the purity and innocence of the angelic church treble, through the coloratura of the nineteenth-century operatic madwoman and the heroic climaxes of her tenor counterpart, to the antisemitic coding in Wagner’s high-tessitura villain roles, high voices do an awful lot of cultural work. Drawn from a book-length project on the topic, this paper will consider how high voices and high vocal notes code for sinister spaces—the devilish, the demonic, the underworld—and how these spaces are also intensely gendered. In order to explore these themes, I draw on examples from heavy metal and death metal, opera from Purcell to Penderecki, musical theatre, and various vocal accompaniments to death.

Saken gjaldt flere krav knyttet til anførte inngrep i immaterielle rettigheter i forbindelse med markedsføring og gjennomføring av konserter med musikk fra Harry Potter-filmene. Saken gjaldt også krav om erstatning for tap som følge av at det ved midlertidig forføyning var lagt ned forbud mot å gjennomføre konserter. Lagmannsretten kom til at musikken var fremført i bearbeidet form og at dette innebar en krenkelse av rettighetshaverens opphavsrett. Rettighetshaverens krav om forbud mot fremføring og om erstatning for opphavsrettskrenkelsen ble tatt til følge. Videre kom lagmannsretten til at markedsføringen av konsertene ikke var i strid med markedsføringsloven § 25, og rettighetshaverens krav om erstatning etter markedsføringsloven ble ikke tatt til følge. For øvrig ble begge partenes anker forkastet.

This article-based dissertation examines how queer opera singers, particularly those in Norway, perform, regulate, and negotiate their genders-sexes-sexualities. Through close engagement with posthumanist theories, the researcher tracks the many ever-changing materials and discourses that (might) shape singers’ identities on and off the stage. In doing so, this dissertation examines the multiple and nuanced ways in which singers co-constitute themselves and are being co-constituted. To facilitate such an examination, the researcher employs autoethnography and conducts ethnographic research with members of a Norwegian queer opera company and a higher music education vocal department in Norway. Granted that the world and people are necessarily in flux, this research situates itself within the post-qualitative paradigm, continuously (dis)entangling personal, local, regional, and global data in its analyses and outputs. In doing so, the research vacillates between the empirical and speculative to elucidate the potential opportunities and limitations faced by singers. The research offers the following findings: First, that queer opera singers, especially those in Norway, continue to face gender-sex-sexuality-related tensions and limitations despite society’s social progress. Secondly, that such tensions and limitations arise due to the complex entanglements between society’s and opera culture’s various materials and discourses and the queer singer’s body-voice, experiences, and material histories. Hence, this research recommends that it is only by attending to the specific material-discursive relationships in a queer singer’s milieu that appropriate interventions can be found. Finally, that Norwegian queer opera singers, in response to the difficulties they face, adopt strategies of negotiation whilst in operatic spaces and create their own opera productions and expressions that both assert and challenge present gender-sex-sexuality concepts.
