Academic interests and background

My research targets central problems in the philosophy of mind and aesthetics, especially concerning our perceptual contact with the world and each other through artistic practices such as depiction and dance. This includes questions about tactual, bodily and olfactory experience, the perception of representing objects, intentionality, and the structure of perceptual experience generally. The approach that I employ in my research treats artistic practices, not as isolated phenomena requiring special treatment, but as explananda for a theory of perception. Further, it integrates philosophical reflection with research from several other disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, musicology, dance studies, and medicine. My current work centres on the relationship between music and dance, and on our shared experiences in social dance.

I lead the Young Research Talents project Perceiving Representations, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. In addition, I co-lead an interdisciplinary Convergence Environment  project at UiO:Life  Science, which uses philosophical, psychological and neuroscientific tools to study consciousness. I have received the inaugural Somaesthetics Research Prize from the American Society for Aesthetics, been a visiting researcher at New York University and Centre for Philosophical Psychology at the University of Antwerp, and worked as Associate Professor at the Norwegian Centre of Excellence CSMN and at the University of Agder. My PhD from University College London was received in 2014. I have been employed by UiO since 2015, and in a permanent position since 2017.
