This talk at OCEH Lab presented research from TOIL-member Miriam Sentler’s doctoral thesis, exploring how Shetlanders use motifs from mythology and science fiction in creative performances to navigate the practical implications of the renewable energy era. The dissertation project 'Energy Acts' investigates how Shetlanders have encountered different forms of energy over time, using their creative island culture to “translate” oil, wind, and other energy industries operating in the context of the North Sea and the North Atlantic. Focusing on archival material showcasing satirical performances about energy production, the project analyses how these performances visualise complex negotiation processes between islanders and industries.

The Moving Energy Theatre (TMET) is an interdisciplinary art project developed as part of Sentler's fieldwork researching oil and island culture in Shetland. TMET reenacted nine “energy acts” originally performed during the community festival Up Helly Aa. These satirical acts comment on how different energy industries have shaped and transformed the Shetland Islands over the past fifty years. For the project, a team recreated costumes and props from the archive documentation of the original performances. They subsequently reintroduced these costumes into the industrial environments they once referenced, allowing spontaneous interactions to emerge around them.
