Person agreement in Chiapas Zoque.
Vis sammendrag
In Chiapas Zoque, core arguments are represented in the verb as prefixes agreeing with the person of the argument. There is a separate set of prefixes for ergative and absolutive agreement. However, each verb has only one person prefix, and the choice of prefix follows an intricate ergative and inverse pattern, although the language does not have morphological inverse marking on the verb. The use of person prefixes also reveals a saliency hierarchy with the 2nd person on top. The variant of Zoque spoken in the communities of Ocotepec and Tapalapa in Northeastern Chiapas also shares these features, but it differs from the other known variants in that a 2nd person patient under certain circumstances may be represented by the ergative prefix rather than the absolutive prefix. In this paper I will contrast data from Ocotepec with descriptions of Copainalá Zoque, the hitherto best described dialect of Zoque, and propose an account of the person marking in these two varieties in terms of Optimality Theory, where the constraints are based on saliency and ergativity. The Ocotepec/Tapalapa dialect also differs from other variants of Zoque in their system of person marking in the subjunctive (dependent form) of intransitive verbs, a system that has not so far received a theoretically coherent description. The proposed OT analysis with its dialect particular ranking also explains this subjunctive person marking in the Ocotepec/Tapalapa dialect.

Syntactic change and language contact.
Vis sammendrag
In this lecture I will discuss the relative roles of language contact and of internal structural conditions in language change. This question will be discussed with reference to three syntactic changes in Norwegian: the development of for-subjects in infinitival clauses; the development of a new infinitive marker; and the change in the relative position of the verb and the negation in embedded clauses. For the first two changes it has been claimed that they are due to influence from another language, English and Low German or Dutch, respectively. For the third change no recent and explicit claim about foreign influence has been made to my knowledge. I will show how both of the first to changes can be explained on internal grounds, without recourse to language contact. For the third change, however, there is a good case for language contact as the underlying cause.

Grammatikalisering og degrammatikalisering i norske infinitivkonstruksjonar.
Vis sammendrag
a. å slå ikke hesten
b. hesten ikke å slå
c. ikke å slå hesten
d. å ikke slå hesten
Her har det altså skjedd flere syntaktiske endringer. I foredraget vil jeg redegjøre for disse endringene i eit grammatikaliseringsperspektiv, og forsøke å sette dem i forbindelse med andre språklige endringer. To slike endringar er utviklingen av ordstillingsmønster i leddsetninger generelt, og den fonologiske utviklingen av selve infinitivsmerket.

From Word to Clitic - and back.
Vis sammendrag
Two recent syntactic changes in Norwegian seem to involve the transition from clitic to free word. These changes are therefore interesting challenges to grammaticalization theory. More interestingly, however, the clitic is in turn a result of an (expected) grammaticalization of a free word. The historical development in both cases is therefore word > clitic > word.
The infinitive markers (IM) in Germanic languages originate in the prepositions. Thus the North Germanic at is also a preposition. As an IM, however, it underwent grammaticalization and was cliticized to the left of the verb. This was the situation in Norwegian until the mid 20th century. Then the IM was reanalyzed as a complementizer.
In Norwegian dialects, a direct or indirect object may move out of its canonical position in VP and cliticize to the (raised) finite verb if it is an unstressed pronoun. In Old Norwegian, this was a process that could affect any complement NP, but in the modern dialects only cliticized pronouns may occur in this position. With the development of a spoken standard Norwegian based on the written language, the clitics were replaced by full forms also in speech, but these forms still occur in the immediate postverbal position, as if they were clitics.

Opp eller ned langs skalaen?
Vis sammendrag

Syntax and morphology in a polysynthetic language: the Zoque noun phrase.
Vis sammendrag
In polysynthetic languages morphology naturally plays a relatively greater role in the grammar than syntax compared to what is the case in analytic languages. In this paper I will demonstrate the predominant role of cliticization in Chiapas Zoque, a meso-American language of Southern Mexico.
Zoque is a polysynthetic language in the regular, pre-theoretical sense of the word, meaning that bound morphemes may express categories that are expressed by individual words in other languages. Two such categories are case and nominal number. Zoque has two grammatical cases and several semantic cases. The case marker is a phrasal clitic, which attaches to the right of the last word of the NP. The plural morpheme tam/dam shows an even more unusual behavior: it may be a phrasal clitic by the same criteria as the case marker, and the order of the two clitics for case and number may vary. This is then a morpheme that violates basic principles of morphology, and it seems to have to be treated in the syntax instead. It is certainly a clitic, but it seems unlikely that a clitic can be inserted inside a morphological word.
In this paper I will offer a solution to this paradox, whereby the plural morpheme is treated as a structurally ambiguous element sharing properties of both phrasal clitics and inflectional affixes.

The grammaticalization of movement: word order change in Nordic.
Vis sammendrag
During the history of the Nordic languages from Old Norse (ON) to Modern Scandinavian (MS), embedded clauses have undergone certain word order changes not shared by root sentences. While the two clause types were very similar in their surface manifestation in ON, this is no longer the case in MS. In ON, both root and embedded sentences seem to have a topic position in front of the finite verb, but they still differ in that the latter have a COMP position in front of the "topic" position. In MS this is the canonical subject position. The change from ON to MS can be seen as a change in which the functional head, I or C, is necessarily lexicalized.
In ON, C was not necessarily lexicalized, while I always was. Spec,IP was therefore not always governed; it was an A-bar position, available for topicalization even in embedded clauses. In MS, I is not lexicalized, while C always is. Spec,IP is thus governed by C and receives nominative case, and the NP in this position is the subject.
This change involves what may be called the 'Grammaticalization of movement'. This means that movement operations become more restricted, in that they have to be specified in terms of grammatical categories (e.g. 'subject'), rather than in terms of discourse functional notions (e.g. 'topic').

Kva driv språkhistoria? Samfunnet eller grammatikken?

Språkvitskapen skil gjerne mellom ytre og indre språkhistorie. Ytre
språkhistorie beskriv kva som skjer med språket som
samfunnsinstitusjon, og ser endringar i språket som utslag av
endringar i samfunnet. Indre språkhistorie er meir interessert i kva
som skjer med sjølve språksystemet, og leiter etter
årsaksforklaringar i form av språkinterne (universelle) prinsipp. I
norsk språkhistorisk tradisjon har interessa for språkutviklinga frå
norrøn tid og fram til i dag konsentrert seg så å seia berre om den
ytre språkhistoria. I dette føredraget vil eg drøfta samanhengen
mellom ytre og indre årsaksforhold, og prøva å visa korleis
språklege endringar kan forståast som utslag av språkinterne
prinsipp i kombinasjon med ytre årsaker. Sentrale stikkord i denne
samanhengen er språkkontakt, fyrstespråksinnlæring og
universalgrammatikk.

Nokre tankar om skiljet mellom syntaks og morfologi i eit polysyntetisk språk.
Vis sammendrag

Grammatical Relations and Ergativity.
Vis sammendrag
In this paper I will discuss some aspects of the nature of grammatical relations in Chiapas Zoque. The language has ergative case marking, free word order, and polysynthetic morphology. Zoque therefore looks like a typical non-configurational language (in the sense of Hale 1981, Jelinek 1984, Baker 1996). According to these analyses, arguments are represented as affixes on the verb, while NPs are free adjuncts. But a close examination of the syntax of argument phrases in Zoque shows that the language does not meet the expected criteria for polysynthesis or non-configurationality. Therefore, NPs must be generated in argument positions, and the language is configurational, which also permits a structural definition of grammatical relations. In these terms, Chiapas Zoque is syntactically ergative. The evidence is that no subject criteria group S and A together in opposition to P. In structural terms, only A is external argument ("subject"), while both S and P are internal arguments ("objects"). An interesting implication of this analysis is that the kind of ergative sub-patterns found in certain Indo-European accusative type languages (Italian, French, Dutch, Scandinavian), are just more or less incomplete variants of the main pattern found in a syntactically ergative language such as Zoque.

The article deals with the ongoing revision of the orthography of bok mål, one of the two written standards of Norwegian. The focus is on t he possible doing away with the distinction between the socalled main forms and subsidiary forms.
