Data donations have recently emerged as research method, partly enabled by legislation such as the GDPR. A relevant challenge they face are low participation rates, which can introduce bias and limit the potential of data donations to harness digital trace data for studying behavior in various contexts. We conducted an interdisciplinary scoping literature review to map research on participation in data donation studies, outlining factors that might discourage participation and strategies to address these issues. To ensure methodological clarity, data donations are defined by clear criteria: The donation is an active and unpaid, but at times incentivized, transfer of intangible, reproducible, and retrospective, trace data. Furthermore, data donations are voluntary and informed, and primarily motivated by contributing to the common good. Based on this definition, which also served as the inclusion criteria for our study, we analyzed 30 studies. Included literature predominantly focuses on health research and hypothetical scenarios, exploring attitudes rather than actual donations. Although the investigated literature is diverse, several factors are discussed to influence willingness to donate. These include respondent characteristics such as gender differences and technical skills, situational factors such as privacy concerns and motivations including egoism, study-related attributes including required data types and who receives the data, and societal-level factors such as contextual influences and culture. Strategies to increase willingness include general approaches like offering benefits and the right communication, as well as study design–related strategies, particularly cultivating trust, e.g., through credible collaborations and appropriate privacy protection.

An enduring yet underexamined tradition in popular cinema, body swap narratives have captivated audiences across cultures and genres. This volume offers the first study of the ‘body swap' film, examining notable examples such as the Freaky Friday films alongside comedies, horrors, and hybrid forms shaped by bodily transformation. Extending beyond cinema, Contributors trace the trope's evolution across television, videogames, digital platforms, online identity practices, and avatar relationships. Grounded in film studies yet interdisciplinary in scope, the collection engages gender theory, race theory, trans scholarship, transnational media studies, and philosophy to illuminate how body swapping reshapes understandings of identity, embodiment, and power in global media culture.

The Routledge Companion to Metafiction examines metafiction’s history and trajectory and identifies its impact across all media and levels of culture. Far from representing metafiction as a self-enclosed hermeneutic project of high postmodernism, the collection foregrounds metafiction’s engagement with politics, history, culture, and identity across various points in literary time. The volume examines metafiction in a variety of genres and fields, such as graphic novels, poetry, film, children’s literature, video games, Indigenous storytelling, critical and queer theory, and more. Collectively, the chapters enrich and broaden existing scholarship while charting new directions for inquiry. At a time when popular culture increasingly embraces metafictional practices—from gaming to commercials to cartoons—the companion highlights the breadth of metafiction’s applications and theories, opens new pathways of research, and expands critical perspectives.

With the increasing use of conversational AI (CAI) agents, such as ChatGPT, public concern about their social implications has grown. Understanding these implications requires new knowledge about the increasingly diverse motives underlying CAI use, ranging from instrumental purposes, such as work, to personal purposes, including social support and entertainment. However, little is known about the motivational profiles underlying CAI use, how these profiles relate to personality traits and attachment dimensions, or whether they differ in well-being. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study with 783 CAI users (Mage = 43.46, SD = 13.58). Drawing on Uses and Gratifications (U & G) Theory, we measured key motivations underlying CAI use, including information seeking, task efficiency, personalization, social interaction, and playfulness, and subjected them to latent profile analysis to uncover distinct motivational profiles. Big Five personality traits (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness) and attachment styles (Anxious and Avoidant) were examined as predictors of the user profiles. We measured emotional, social, and psychological well-being to understand if these aspects differed across the various user profiles. We identified four distinct profiles of CAI users: Occasional Information Seekers, Utilitarians, Social Engagers, and All-Round Engagers. Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Attachment anxiety were significant predictors of profile membership. Finally, profile membership was associated with all well-being indicators, with All-Round Engagers reporting the highest well-being across all three dimensions and Social Engagers reporting the lowest emotional and psychological well-being. These findings advance our understanding of who engages with CAI and how, with potential implications for well-being.

This study examines the use of Facebook by political actors across
eight European countries – Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary,
Kosovo, Norway, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom – as they attempt
to engage voters through calls to action. By analysing what is often
referred to as the supply and demand of political communication,
the paper conceptualizes three primary types of calls to action:
informing, mobilizing, and interacting. Our findings reveal that
mobilizing calls are the most prevalent, reflecting the central
mission of election campaigns to secure voter turnout. However,
such calls do not necessarily result in higher user engagement
compared to informative content. Despite the potential for
interactive features to enhance dialogic communication, they
remain underutilized, with political actors apparently favouring
controlled interactivity to maintain message control. The study
highlights significant cross-country differences, with variations in the
degree of engagement reached by different calls to action as
influenced by national political contexts and campaign cultures. The
research underscores the importance of considering both the
strategic priorities of political actors and the cultural and
institutional factors that shape voter engagement on social media.

This research article examines the multifaceted role of TikTok in the lives of young users, focusing on empirical data collected through creative workshops with teenagers aged 16–17 in Oslo. The study builds on a framework from mediatisation research and previous analyses of TikTok to differentiate between the micro, meso, and macro level functions of TikTok in social life. At the micro level, TikTok serves as an algorithmic ‘feel good’ space, enabling users to engage with content that resonates with their identities and promotes personal development. The meso level highlights TikTok’s role in fostering vibrant, interest-driven transcultural spaces where users navigate social interactions and collective expressions. Finally, at the macro level, the platform emerges as a cultural symbol reflecting broader societal anxieties and moral panics regarding youth behaviour. Incorporating insights from recent literature, this article underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of TikTok in youth research, challenging traditional perceptions of digital platforms. By including the voices and experiences of young people, this study contributes significantly to contemporary discussions about digital youth culture and the implications of algorithm-driven platforms in shaping their everyday lives.

This chapter is about political issues in the 2025 election. The most
important issues for Norwegian voters in the election, staring with the most important,
were taxes, health care, foreign and defense policy, other economic issues,
climate/environmental issues, immigration and education. Foreign policy and
defense policy rose dramatically in importance since the last election in 2021. The
last time these issues were high on the agenda was in the 1980s. Climate change
and environmental issues have dramatically declined in importance, whereas
economic issues were top of mind for voters in 2025. The two winners in the election,
the Progress Party and the Labor Party, have high levels of issue ownership of
economic issues. The Progress Party has gained in issue ownership on a number
of issues since the last election, while the Conservative Party has lost.

How does the ever-growing relevance of social media shape political campaigning? A vibrant public and academic debate addresses the role of social media in elections and democratic processes. Yet, despite a surge in research, we still know little about the extent to which political parties adjust established issue strategies to the priorities of different social media platforms’ audiences and how effective these are in generating user engagement. Drawing on theories of issue competition – issue ownership, riding-the-wave, and issue yield – we analyze parties’ social media communication during the 2025 German federal election campaign on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Combining manual quantitative content analysis of party and candidate posts with large-scale survey data from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES), we assess both strategic use and effectiveness of issue strategies. Our results show that parties strategically prioritize owned issues and those salient on the general public agenda, often combining both dimensions in issue yield strategies. However, these strategies only partly align with what the specific platform audiences value and reward. User engagement is highest for posts that match platform-specific issue preferences, especially when the issues are salient both to a party’s supporters on that platform and to its wider user base. The findings offer new insights into the dynamics of contemporary digital campaigning and cross-platform party competition.

This article develops the concept of affective chronotope, as a synthesis of rhetorical topos, affect heuristics, and place-based argumentation, to examine how configurations of time, place, and affect shape political debate. Empirically, we analyze the 2023 Norwegian parliamentary debate on a proposed ground-rent tax on the profitable salmon farming industry, where representatives on both sides repeatedly anchored fiscal and technical arguments in The Coast. Drawing on rhetorical criticism of the debate transcript and video recordings, we identify 132 text fragments invoking a coastal topos and assess them through three criteria: proximity, concreteness, and intensity. The analysis shows how the affective chronotope constituted proximity to The Coast as a source of expertise, forged an unlikely alliance between blue-collar workers and billionaire owners, and sidelined environmental concerns by naturalizing a growth-oriented rationale. In shifting the premise from public welfare to place-based privilege—from commons to commodity—the affective chronotope proved a strategic mobilizing force. We argue that the framework offers a more nuanced account of place-based arguments and their affective and temporal entanglements in political rhetoric.

A crisis always comes with uncertainty, which is often increased by changing guidelines or rules, and multiple actors communicating their perspectives. This exploratory qualitative study examines the role of a coordinated and multivocal approach to address uncertainty during a global crisis and generates assumptions for future research. Through semi-structured interviews with communication professionals and community actors involved in health crises, we investigate how uncertainty was managed in three trust contexts—Germany, Italy, and Romania—during COVID-19. The analysis shows how uncertainty was perceived during the pandemic, and we propose ideas for future research and crisis management regarding coordination, multivocality, and acknowledgment of uncertainty, which were revealed as preferred strategies.

A growing body of literature has studied the audiences and effects of alternative media use. We contribute by examining how such usage shapes political knowledge during election campaigns. Given their partisan orientation, lack of professional verification, and often provocative style, alternative media are found to produce and circulate misinformation, even as their users are often politically engaged, active news consumers. We ask whether alternative media inform rather than misinform citizens during election campaigns. Adopting a two-dimensional conception of political knowledge, we examine both surveillance knowledge and confidence in that knowledge – along with misinformation understood as the combination of the two. Utilizing individual-level panel data from Norway, our findings suggest that alternative news use is not associated with being better or worse informed, but with being more confident in one’s political knowledge. We discuss how these effects may differ in more polarized or lower-quality information environments.

Norwegian party finance has traditionally rested on the principle that parties should be funded primarily through generous public subsidies rather than private contributions, limiting the role of external money in politics. The 2025 parliamentary election may mark a break with this model: private donations reached a historic high, and for the first time the right-wing bloc received more than the left. Drawing on the 2025 Storting Candidate Survey, party accounting data, and the 2025 Election Survey, this chapter examines how parliamentary candidates view party donations, regulation, and donor influence. We find pronounced differences along partisan and ideological lines, but also within parties: candidates from parties receiving large contributions – and top candidates in particular – regard donations as beneficial and are less inclined to see them as a democratic problem or to favor stricter regulation. Attitudes thus reflect not only ideology but also position and self-interest. Comparing candidates with voters, we find that right-wing top candidates are notably less concerned about large donations than their own voters. The findings suggest the Norwegian party finance model may be changing, raising new questions about money’s role in Norwegian democracy.

How much did generative AI matter in the 2025 Norwegian parliamentary election? This chapter approaches the question from the voters’ perspective, examining who used tools like ChatGPT and Claude during the campaign, what they used them for, and how much they trusted what these tools told them. We then turn from use to perception: how voters considered AI’s influence on themselves and on others, and whether they found it harder to tell true from false in an information environment increasingly shaped by AI-generated content. The results complicates both the optimistic and the alarmist accounts of AI’s arrival in electoral politics. The use of AI was concentrated in particular groups, and AI were used alongside established news sources. Situated at an early stage of generative AI’s integration into election campaigns, the analysis offers a baseline for tracking how this technology may reshape the political information environment in future elections.

Norwegian voters are less loyal to political parties and more likely to switch vote between elections than in earlier years. In the 2025 parliamentary election, 39 percent of all voters changed their vote from the previous election in 2021 – this includes voters who took part in both elections. The level of volatility is even higher when including those who switched in or out of the “no vote” group: 55 percent. The two winners in the election, the Progress Party and the Labor Party, both won over voters that supported the Center Party in 2021. Young voters and especially young women tend to switch their vote more often than others. Tactical voting played a role in the election, but we see no evidence that it determined the balance of power in Parliament.

This chapter examines Norwegian voters’ political media use during the 2025 election campaign and how different forms of media use were related to political knowledge. We find that traditional editorial media remain the core sources of political information, both in terms of daily use and perceived importance. Social media play a more limited role in the electorate as a whole but are important for many young voters, especially as supplementary channels for following political events and actors. The analyses further show that Norwegian voters were relatively well informed after the campaign. Traditional media use is positively associated with political knowledge, while social media use and political use of AI show no
clear relationship with either game or substance knowledge. Overall, the chapter shows that the Norwegian campaign information environment is changing, but not disintegrating

This updated and expanded second edition brings together cutting-edge research across six continents to provide a comprehensive, global, up-to-date review of political uses of social media.
In its 32 chapters, this second edition of The Routledge Companion to Social Media and Politics covers the good, the bad, and the as yet uncertain of current developments in the uses of social media in political contexts, ten years on from the first book. It is organised into six sections: Concepts, Challenges, Policies, Problems, Platforms, and Possibilities, each featuring chapters by leading researchers in the field that address these themes from a wide variety of viewpoints. This edition arrives at a new critical point: generative AI and other emerging technologies may either accelerate the crises of disinformation, polarisation, and democratic decline, or open new spaces for civic innovation, regulation, and accountability. The politics of digital platforms remain unsettled, and this Companion provides a critical map of the present while pointing to the possibilities and futures that will define the next decade of social media and politics.
At a time when the politics of social media use remain unsettled, this comprehensive collection is an essential reference for academic communities in areas ranging from media and communication studies through internet studies and journalism studies to political science, and may be used by researchers as well as teachers and students in these respective fields.

Online victimization has been linked to mental health problems. Youth often do not disclose these experiences, and little is known about disclosure barriers, particularly among youth with mental health challenges. This study aimed to fill this gap by identifying barriers to and facilitators of disclosure for this vulnerable group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 45 young people aged 13–22 from the UK and Norway who had mental health challenges and experiences with cyberbullying, sexual abuse online, and/or exposure to harmful content online. We asked the youth open-ended questions about digital activity and negative online experiences, whether they had disclosed such experiences, and what helped or stopped them from disclosing. The responses were analyzed using Reflective Thematic Analysis. Previous negative life experiences leading to lack of trust, being afraid of the consequences, and avoiding difficult feelings were described as barriers while disclosure was facilitated when they were asked directly about their online activities. Given the growing evidence for the association between mental health challenges and risky digital activities, more knowledge on disclosure barriers is needed. Since young people find it difficult to initiate conversations regarding events that they feel shameful for and fear negative consequences of disclosure, adults must actively inquire into online activities in a supportive and non-judgmental manner. Youth with mental health challenges may have had negative experiences in the past that caused them to lose trust. As a result, it is important to rebuild their trust. Disclosure is encouraged by asking direct questions about online activity.

In just a few decades, the field of non-fiction research has become an established one, with its own journals, professorships, and textbooks. Yet criticism has also grown: Has the term “non-fiction” become so all-encompassing as to lose precision? Has research done within the field become too narrow, despite a view of texts that extends from tram tickets and milk carton blurbs to legal code and multi-volume history surveys? This anthology brings together researchers who, each in their own way, challenge established non-fiction research, based on their own fields and perspectives. All of the contributions also attempt to point out new paths this type of research can take. A recurrent question is whether the time has come to view “non-fiction research” not as a separate field, but as an open, multidisciplinary, and multi-voiced area of research that revolves around research on the myriad of texts that help shape the society we live in. Non-fiction. Research. New Perspectives on Non-Fiction is aimed at researchers, students and teachers, but will also be of interest to publishers, bureaucrats, critics and anyone else who is concerned with understanding both non-fiction research and the texts that are researched.

This concluding chapter summarizes the main findings of the book and discusses what explains the outcome of the 2025 Norwegian parliamentary election. The chapter highlights five central explanations: i) an ideological shift to the right, ii) increased voter turnout with partisan consequences, iii) the growing importance of economic concerns, iv) the role of foreign and security policy, and v) the media’s influence on voter’s political priorities. The chapter concludes by discussing what the 2025 election tells us about broader trends in Norwegian politics in the 2020s.

This chapter examines whether the media influenced which issues voters considered important in the 2025 Norwegian parliamentary election, and whether this mattered for vote choice. Drawing on theories of agenda-setting, issue ownership, and priming, the analysis combines panel survey data from the first four waves of the Election Campaign Study with an automated content analysis of approximately 3.5 million sentences from over 200 news outlets, debate programs, social media platforms, search engines, and AI chatbots. The analysis proceeds in two steps. At the aggregate level, the media agenda and the voter agenda show only a moderate correspondence: media emphasized foreign policy issues such as Gaza and Ukraine, while voters prioritized taxation, health, and climate. At the individual level, we construct personalized news diets for each respondent and track the same voters across the campaign. We find clear agenda-setting effects for less obtrusive issues such as the economy, defence, taxation, and foreign policy. A path model further demonstrates a priming effect: media exposure shifts voters’ issue priorities, which in turn shifts vote intention toward parties associated with those issues. Even in a fragmented media landscape, media content meaningfully shaped electoral choice.

The digitalisation of political communication has diversified opportunities for political parties and politicians to communicate with voters and set the public agenda by either addressing or bypassing journalists. Specifically, the spread of social media platforms has created a digital public sphere where large audiences can be reached at extremely low costs. The digital architectures and affordances of social media platforms have the potential to determine political communication practices, e.g., making political campaigns increasingly visual or negative. From this, political campaigns as a whole and how their main functions are exercised—informing, mobilising, interacting—could be influenced. For example, implementing social listening and semantic polling as feedback channels could distort the image politicians have of the electorate in favor of active social media users. Approaches such as microtargeting offer politicians the opportunity to reach the electorate with finely tailored messages but could also further fragment democratic societies by presenting different groups of voters with different messages. In addition, the speed at which generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming public communication has accelerated massively. Vast amounts of computer-generated text, images and even videos can be created without technical skills. In the truest sense of the word, images can be generated in election campaigns that can catch on with the electorate and influence attitudes, opinions and behavioural intentions. Against this backdrop, the chapter provides an overview of how election campaigns have changed, how the digital architecture and usage practices shape campaign content and what consequences this has for potential effects of campaigns.

Infertility is often understood primarily in medical terms, as a problem of reproduction and treatment outcomes. This book argues that such an approach overlooks the experience itself and the way it can reshape an entire horizon of life. For those who live through infertility, it may become a profound rupture that reaches far beyond the inability to conceive, altering one’s sense of self, one’s relation to the body, connections with others, and the way the future is imagined. Bringing together phenomenology, trauma theory, psychotherapy, and Gloria Anzaldúa’s thought, the book proposes an original framework for understanding infertility as trauma. It draws on philosophical reflection alongside personal narrative and experiential research, while placing lived experience at the centre of both interpretation and care. Rather than presenting infertility simply as a medical condition or a private struggle, it approaches it as a transformation of one’s way of being in and with the world. The result is what the author calls a phenomenology of nepantla: a phenomenological exploration of the spaces opened by rupture and displacement, attentive to experiences of being in-between and to the uncertain movements through which healing can gradually take shape.

Women have always worked in Norwegian cinema, but their contributions are often missing from film historical accounts. In the anthology ‘How Film Histories Were Made’, editors Malte Hagener and Yvonne Zimmermann state that “the constitution of film history itself has rarely been systematically addressed and studied in-depth” (2023, 14). The archival turn in film studies has highlighted the fundamental role of the film archives and film heritage institutions in determining what is included – or not – in film histoires. However, the archival absence of women professionals presents a challenge. An estimate presented at the 2023 FIAF Symposium panel in Mexico City cites the share of works by female (-identifying) filmmakers in the collections of the 99 FIAF film heritage institutions (Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film) to be at one percent. We propose that filmographies are an often-overlooked part of the discussion of what constitutes film history. To explore this issue, we will use methods (data visualization) and concepts from the digital humanities to investigate how costume designers are present and presented in the Norwegian filmographies. From this specific occupational category, we will draw out insights and questions that address the wider topic of women and film historiography.

Reporting energy injustice: Indigenous land claims and the “green” shift in local news.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
This paper investigates how local journalism mediates energy justice in the context of the “green” transition, through a case study of media coverage of the Øyfjellet wind power conflict in Norway. The conflict concerns a wind power plant licensed by Norwegian state authorities, and its impacts on the Sámi reindeer herding district Jillen Njaarke Sijte, whose traditional pasturelands and migration routes were disrupted by the project. While renewable energy expansion is commonly framed as environmentally necessary, this case highlights how the distribution of benefits and burdens of the green transition remains profoundly uneven.
The paper asks: How did the local newspaper Helgelendingen report the Øyfjellet conflict, and in what ways did its coverage articulate—or obscure—key dimensions of energy justice? It examines how questions of distributive, recognitional, and procedural justice were framed in local news reporting, and how Indigenous Sámi knowledge and land based expertise were positioned relative to industrial, legal, and economic rationales for wind power development.
The study is grounded in energy justice scholarship, which conceptualises the green transition not only as a technical shift in energy systems but as a social process shaped by power, inequality, and historical injustice. This framework is combined with work on green colonialism and internal colonisation in the Nordic Sámi context, as well as theories of epistemic injustice and strategic ignorance. These perspectives enable an analysis of how journalism participates in defining whose knowledge counts as relevant and credible in debates about “just” energy futures.
Empirically, the paper draws on a qualitative close reading of approximately 200 news articles and opinion pieces published between 2011 and 2024, with a focus on the newspaper’s coverage of the District Court case held in Mosjøen in May–June 2024. The analysis attends to framing, sourcing practices, language use, and journalistic reliance on information subsidies supplied by corporate and legal actors during both the planning phase and the court proceedings.
The findings show that while reporting prior to the construction of the wind power plant (2019-2022) presented the conflict as involving multiple stakeholders, the coverage of the 2024 court case was characterised by pronounced asymmetries. Journalistic dependence on the wind company’s legal framing and communicative resources foregrounded economic efficiency, regulatory compliance, and climate mitigation, while marginalising Sámi claims as rights holders and knowledge bearers. Indigenous understandings of land, mobility, and cumulative encroachment were rendered vague or unintelligible, resulting in forms of testimonial and recognitional injustice. Procedural energy justice was similarly weakened, as unequal communicative capacities were normalised rather than critically interrogated.
Local journalism plays a consequential role in shaping public understandings of energy justice in the green transition. When Indigenous peoples are primarily framed as obstacles to development rather than as rights holders affected by unjust energy regimes, local media risk reproducing colonial logics under the banner of sustainability. The study contributes to energy justice and journalism scholarship by demonstrating how injustices are not only produced through energy policy and infrastructure, but also through everyday news practices that legitimise particular energy futures while silencing others.

Engaging new audiences through digital dissemination of Norwegian rock art.

The Museum of Cultural History (MCH), University of Oslo, has the administrative responsibility for over 2000 petroglyphs in southeastern Norway. The figures range from animal figures representing moose, whales and other wild animals, to boats, people and sun-figures. In the Nordic countries, it was once common to paint rock carvings to give the public the opportunity to see the figures regardless of lighting conditions, but this practice has become controversial for several reasons (Bjelland and Helberg 2006). Since painting is no longer practiced, we must investigate alternative methods to disseminate the figures and create meaningful experiences for visitors. In this presentation, we will discuss several avenues into the use of technology to create such experiences for the public.
Methods and materials
The MCH is collaborating with local authorities to disseminate rock art in their jurisdiction to the general public. In 2025, work commenced on several sites across southern Norway. 3D documentation produced with an Artec Leo structured light scanner, photogrammetry and Gaussian splats were combined with the detailed interpretations already held in the museum's archives. By exploiting common 3D and GIS toolsets, we were able to bring these interpretations into 3D space, allowing the visitor to switch between the non-painted and digitally repainted versions. Combining this data with publishing platform ESRI StoryMaps and 3D rendering programs provided a powerful tool for communicating some of the hardto experience characteristics of these carvings, such as the dramatic effect the position of the sun, as well as contextualize the rock art and research in simple and accessible ways. Another project at the MCH together with the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo aims to better communicate the people behind the petroglyphs through innovative technologies involves the use of the Unity-based SitSim (Situated Simulations) Augmented Reality platform (Bishop et al. 2025). Still in development, this project will deliver a mobile application which will allow visitors of a stone age rock art site in central Oslo to experience a 3D animated scene of a stone age person carving the petroglyphs, as well as a reconstruction of the surrounding environment around 7000 years ago.
Results
Although ongoing, some preliminary results have been positive. Firstly, these technologies allow a more interactive form of dissemination. Rather than visitors being passive consumers of information from a sign or brochure, some technologies can include them in the process or exploration and interpretation of petroglyphs. This is especially true for the second project that draws on the potential of Augmented Reality to engage the visitor with their surroundings. Secondly, these technologies allow us to go beyond reality and into the realm of reconstruction and hypothesis testing. By integrating many types of data for the reconstruction of the stone age landscape but, importantly, also considering the people who created the petroglyphs, we are forced to take a holistic approach to rock art. Discussion In the national strategy for protection of cultural heritage, the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren) specifically mentions method development in the documentation, preservation and dissemination of rock art as a prioritization for cultural heritage management in Norway, as well as a need to further develop documentation methods and to utilize new documentation technologies for less invasive dissemination. Many petroglyphs are situated in vulnerable and remote nature areas that require careful management and benefit from methods that allow visitors to virtually visit the sites. Notable examples from Norway include “Virtuelle Vingen” and the 360° virtual tours at the Alta World Heritage Center for Rock Art. We believe that many of the approaches we employed in our projects can be directly transferred and implemented on other projects related to petroglyphs both in Norway and the rest of the world, and provide a useful base for more advanced, and integrated experiences as mixed realities technologies continue to mature.

Stillhet som retorisk praksis i demokratiet.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
underbelyst rolle i demokratiske prosesser.

Adapting Modernism. Vicki Baum’s Grand Hotel from Weimar Novel to Classical Hollywood.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

This thesis explores how modernist elements are transformed when a literary text is adapted into classical Hollywood cinema, a form of cinema traditionally regarded as opposed to modernist aesthetics and concerns. Through a comparative textual analysis of Vicki Baum’s Grand Hotel (1929) and its 1932 MGM film adaptation directed by Edmund Goulding, the study examines how modernist elements are reconfigured across media. Particular attention is paid to the female characters, through whom gendered experiences of modernity are negotiated differently in the two versions. Drawing on expanded modernist frameworks, the analysis is structured around three dimensions of modernist representation: the formal, conceptual, and experiential dimension.
The findings show that modernist elements do not disappear in the adaptation process but are transformed and redistributed according to the formal, modal, and industrial logic of classical Hollywood cinema. In particular, the melodramatic mode proves to be a key site in which modernist tensions are translated into popular form. By approaching modernism not as a fixed characteristic that a work either possesses or lacks, but as a set of fluid concerns that can be reconfigured across media and cultural contexts, this thesis contributes to both adaptation studies and modernist studies. It argues that expanding the modernist canon requires taking seriously the popular and gendered forms through which modernism may appear, including Hollywood cinema and melodrama.

This thesis examines how the Norwegian public service media (PSM) NRK seeks to reach younger audiences in a fragmented and platformized media environment. Young people's media habits become shaped by digital platforms, PSM face growing challenges in maintaining relevance and fulfilling their democratic mandate. Based on qualitative interviews with NRK employees, the study explores how they adapt their strategies, journalism, and distribution to engage younger users. Findings show that NRK increasingly tailors content to the logics of platforms such as TikTok through short-form formats, personality-driven presentation, and explanatory storytelling. At the same time, NRK seeks to balance platform adaptation with their public service values, particularly through constructive journalism and efforts to strengthen young audiences' engagement with news and current affairs. The thesis argues that NRK's recent presence on third-party platforms is viewed as necessary to remain relevant among younger users and to secure the future role of PSM. However, this strategy also sees tensions related to editorial control and the ability to fulfill its public service mission on platforms controlled by algorithms. It highlights the challenges and opportunities facing PSM as they seek to connect with new generations experiencing fatigue and avoidance in a changing media landscape.

Teens and TikTok: Exploring the mediatised everyday lives of teenagers.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
This PhD thesis investigates the mediatisation of teenagers’ everyday lives, using TikTok as a case study to illuminate broader dynamics of digital culture and communication. It contributes to mediatisation theory by centring the lived experiences of teenagers— individuals aged 13–19—whose voices have often been marginalised or overgeneralised in media research.
The main research question asks: How are teenagers’ everyday lives mediatised? Four operational questions guide the inquiry: (1) How can mediatisation theory help explain the relationship between teenagers and digital media? (2) Why is TikTok a productive case for examining mediatisation? (3) How do teenagers use digital media to build and express identity? (4) How does TikTok shape their social experiences? Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative, participatory approach, conducting seven creative TikTok workshops with 16–17-year-old students at an international school in Oslo. Empirical data—audio recordings, field notes, and dialogic vignettes—were analysed through the lens of mediatisation theory, focusing on agency, identity, and social worlds as interrelated processes.
Findings show that TikTok is embedded in teenagers’ social lives as both an expressive space and a site of pressure. The platform enables identity exploration and social connection, while simultaneously intensifying dynamics of visibility, comparison, and social validation. Teenagers use TikTok collaboratively and creatively, but also navigate anxieties tied to peer perception and performance.
The thesis advances a conceptual framework that views mediatisation as a dynamic interplay between practices, textures, and ecologies in everyday life. It challenges narratives of moral panic by foregrounding teenagers as active participants in shaping digital culture rather than passive consumers.
In conclusion, TikTok provides a window into how digital media mediate not only communication, but the very fabric of teenage social existence. Teenagers are not merely affected by media—they actively shape and negotiate them. Understanding mediatisation, therefore, means understanding how young people live and make meaning through media in a deeply digital society.

I denne oppgaven anvendes rammeverket for å analysere generativ KIs implikasjoner for journalistikken.

A window into culture. A qualitative study in Norwegian young adults’ responses to Expat-influencer content on Instagram reels.

Expat-influencers are a growing phenomenon on social media platforms like Instagram, where Expatriates document and share their experiences moving, settling, and adapting to a new country and culture. This allows for a new way to share knowledge about culture and intercultural communications, allowing audiences to get a glimpse of cultural differences, misunderstandings, and culture crashes from the cultural window of Expat-influencer Instagram reels. In this master thesis I argue that this “cultural window effect” can give the viewer important knowledge about culture and intercultural communications, that later can be applied to help build intercultural competence through own experiences. The term “mediated intercultural learning” is also introduced as a new way to understand intercultural learning. These concepts were drawn from two extensive focus group interviews with a total of nine Norwegian young adults, where empirical findings were discussed and analysed using a theoretical framework consisting of literature in the fields of culture, communications, and intercultural communication. The cultural window effect, and mediated intercultural learning are concepts that can be applied to other mediums that promote intercultural learning through giving the viewer an immersive experience, encountering intercultural situations without in-person interaction. Analysis showed that informants agreed to the portrayal of Norwegian culture through chosen Expat-influencers’ Instagram reels, and that watching and discussing the videos provoked reflections about intercultural communications. This study explores synergies between social media and intercultural communications, and sheds light on Expat-influencers, a phenomenon that has received limited scholarly attention.

Abstract
Alveus Sanctuary is an online nonprofit that engages with their audience, mainly through their channel on the livestreaming platform Twitch. A case study of the organization Alveus Sanctuary is performed, using the method of qualitative content analysis. The goal of this case study is to explore the model of Alveus Sanctuary, their content, and their relationship with their viewers. Here, my first research question asks how parasocial relationships helps the model of Alveus Sanctuary. For my second research question, I ask whether the connection between viewers and animal ambassadors can be considered parasocial.
The model Alveus Sanctuary utilizes is based on virtual education around their animal ambassadors, teaching about topics such as conservation, the pet trade and consumer choice. Their online model has made Alveus Sanctuary able to reach 250 million people each year, and the ability to fundraise millions. By engaging viewers in their content, as well as including them in conservation efforts, viewers feel a part of Alveus, at least parasocially, through a trans-parasocial relationship. Additionally, the findings suggests that parasocial relationships do exist between viewers of Alveus Sanctuary and their animal ambassadors. This is part of why viewers care. The model of Alveus Sanctuary is helped through trans-parasocial relationships, as well as parasocial relationships with the animals, which encourages actions such as donating, subscribing and viewing their Twitch channel. Additionally, arguably through the creation of parasocial relationships between the viewers and the animal ambassadors, Alveus’ message of animal education and conservation is disseminated.
Keywords: Alveus Sanctuary, Twitch, parasocial relationships, animal ambassador, online nonprofit

TikTok #CleanGirls and I: Clean looks, clean conscience?
A qualitative study of young women’s perceptions of the Clean Girl trend on TikTok and its influence on social comparison processes.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
In an intersection between social comparison theory, TikTok research and feminist media studies, this study examines how young Norwegian women perceive and position themselves in relation to the #CleanGirl trend on TikTok, and how, if at all, it influences their social comparison processes and everyday practices. The study adopts a qualitative design based on an in depth, semi structured focus group with a small sample of TikTok-active young Norwegian women. Conducted in Oslo, the interview was audio-recorded, transcribed and translated, before being analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis is informed by Festinger’s social comparison theory, later developments on comparison direction, the third person effect, and feminist media scholarship on TikTok girl trends and digital femininity.
Through analysis, three interlinked themes emerged. First, participants describe Clean Girl as a narrow, demanding ideal of “effortless” minimalist beauty and strict routines, embodied by thin, normatively feminine, white or white passing, affluent women which they recognize as “unrealistic” and structurally skewed. Second, participants engage in primarily upward comparison to “slightly better off” Clean Girls that feels both inspiring by fueling self improvement around appearance, health and routines, and pressuring, particularly around productivity, occasionally evoking feelings of inadequacy. Third, the trend is negotiated through third person effect and disidentification, projecting harmful impacts onto “younger, more impressionable girls” and critiquing the Clean Girl trend as conservative, anti feminist and hyper capitalist, while still joking about being “very Clean Girl” or “very un Clean Girl” and using the label as a compliment.
The thesis concludes that Clean Girl operates as a powerful, TikTok mediated feminine ego ideal that influences participants evaluations of themselves and others, even when explicitly rejecting the identity. The applicability of social comparison theory for analyzing gendered social life on TikTok is demonstrated and this study contributes to debates on digital femininities and the subtle ways platformed trends are internalized. Findings illustrate that these young women are both critical of and shaped by Clean Girl, and that they negotiate its pressures through a blend of aspiration, humor, projection and political distancing, underscoring how TikTok girl trends structure contemporary femininity and social comparison.

Young women’s solo travel to Bali: Social media imaginaries, authenticity and performance.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

This thesis explores why women in their 20s travel solo to Bali and how social media imaginaries shape their expectations and lived experiences. While existing studies have examined female solo travel, wellness tourism, and the influence of social media on destination image separately, few studies have qualitatively explored how these dimensions intersect in the self-discovery journeys of young women.
There is a lack of in-depth research on how social media imaginaries, gendered autonomy, and the search for meaning are negotiated both before and during solo travel, especially in the context of Bali as a popular self-development destination. This research tackles this gap by providing rich empirical insight through eight qualitative interviews with women in their 20s, including a two-month period of observational fieldwork conducted in Bali. Drawing on theories of self-presentation, branded authenticity, liquid modernity, therapeutic culture, and orientalism, the thesis examines how contemporary ideals of autonomy, self-development, and meaning-making are negotiated through travel.
A central finding in this research is a “digital paradox”: while social media representations initially inspire the choice to travel to Bali, participants actively pursue authenticity through selective digital disconnection rather than extensive documentation. This is particularly evident in the participants’ documentation practices, where they preferred to use Instagram Stories as a “semi-backstage” to manage impressions of spontaneity and presence, while simultaneously distancing themselves from sharing their Bali experiences on the permanent Instagram grid as posts.
Ultimately, these findings help create a deeper understanding of how women in their 20s navigate identity and autonomy within a landscape that is both deeply personal and fundamentally digitalized and mediated. By situating these journeys within the uncertainties of modern life, my research highlights how the search for meaning and identity in the 21st century unfolds through a continuous tension between the desire for visibility and the need for withdrawal in an increasingly performative and digitalized culture.

To valgkamper, ett parti.

The master’s thesis “Are you guys seeing this?” : Laughing and screaming in the livestream film explores an emergent form of found footage horror with a focus on the intersection of comedy, horror, livestreaming technology and the culture associated with and afforded by said technology, conceptualising these films as ‘livestream horror features’. Found footage horror, which borrows from documentary and other non-fiction ways of filmmaking to express horror narratives, has always depended on current technology. With the rise of livestreaming as a form of independent content creation online, horror filmmakers have used this format. This is a comparative text analysis of three such films, Deadstream (Winter & Winter, 2022), Dashcam (Savage, 2021), and Spree (Kotlyarenko, 2020). The thesis identifies key similarities, such as anxieties regarding visibility, digital identity, and masculinity, while also addressing the individual quirks of each film, granting a wider image of the portrayal of livestreaming culture and influencers on film. As these films feature built-in, fictional audiences, they problematise spectatorship, a quality enhanced by their satirical content.

From the Curator to the Interface. Pinterest and The Shifting Authority Over Art.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

For most of its history, art was controlled by religious and sacred institutions, and later by the museum, which inherited that authority. Curators were the ones who decided what works were shown, how they were talked about, and which ones were treated as important enough to remember. This kind of authority has a name in scholarship. Bourdieu called it cultural capital, and Bennett described how museums use layout and labels to shape what we see, what he called the exhibitionary complex. This thesis asks what happens to that authority when another path opens up alongside the museum, such as Pinterest, a digital platform built around collecting and organizing rather than sharing. Anyone can build a board, group artworks by their own logic, and, by saving and repinning, shape what other users encounter.
Working through platform studies, algorithmic governance, and MacDowall and Budge's theory of the networked art image, I examine how Pinterest redistributes curatorial authority and visibility in relation to the long-standing institutional role of the museum. To do this, I use four methods: a walkthrough analysis of Pinterest’s interface and infrastructure, a visual and interface analysis of five user boards, a comparative qualitative analysis that sets Pinterest side by side with the museum, and a discourse analysis of the different vocabulary each one uses.
Platform studies have shown that platforms rearrange authority rather than remove it (Gillespie, Van Dijck, Bucher). With this, I argue that Pinterest shifts curatorial authority rather than eliminating it. Earlier work looks at Instagram (MacDowall and Budge) or at Pinterest's design users (Scolere and Humphreys), but I look at Pinterest itself as a curatorial structure set against the museum. The curator is replaced by the interface, and the wall text by an algorithm that decides what shows up first. Anyone can curate, but what people actually see is decided by saves, repins, and search ranking, not by how art historically important something is. As artworks circulate, they get stripped of attribution, date, and context, and the image’s meaning changes with each board they land on. This is what Benjamin called the loss of aura, what turns the work into a networked art image. Pinterest does open art up to new audiences. It just does it inside a system that already decides what those audiences see and in what order. This is a reimagined canon built by a different machine, one that runs on circulation rather than the judgment of an institution.

Not One Europe?. A Qualitative Content Analysis of Corporate Sustainability Communication Across Varieties of Capitalism.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

This master's thesis explores the extent to which the characteristics of different varieties of
capitalism shape the sustainability communication of European resource-intensive firms. To
explore this, the thesis utilises the theoretical framework Varieties of Capitalism, which
suggests that capitalism does not manifest itself uniformly, but varies across institutional
contexts in ways that shape firm behaviour and strategy. Three European energy companies are
selected as cases, each representing a distinct variety of capitalism: SSE (United Kingdom,
Liberal Market Economy), Vattenfall (Sweden, Coordinated Market Economy), and PGE
(Poland, Dependent Market Economy). Each case is analysed separately, before they are
brought together in a comparative discussion, where the findings from the analysis are
compared to address the research question at hand.
The empirical basis consists of publicly available corporate reports, analysed through a
qualitative content analysis. The analysis examines the firms’ sustainability communication
along three dimensions: how sustainability is understood and justified, what is emphasised, and
the role and responsibility the firms communicate in relation to sustainability.
The findings of this thesis indicate that institutional context does shape sustainability
communication, though to a varying extent and not in isolation. Several differences across the
cases align with characteristics associated with their respective varieties of capitalism, while
similarities across the firms indicate a degree of standardisation of corporate sustainability
communication. Still, a closer interpretive reading suggests that while shared regulations,
expectations and external pressures contribute to shaping this communication, this does not
necessarily result in completely uniform communication. The differences across the cases can
partly be explained by the institutional characteristics associated with different varieties of
capitalism. The thesis contributes to existing scholarship by not treating Europe as a
homogeneous context and by including a representative case from Central and Eastern Europe,
thereby addressing identified gaps in the existing literature on corporate sustainability
communication.

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan unge voksne samboerpar i Norge opplever at phubbing påvirker forholdet deres.

Representing Tatar Identity. Visual and Textual Signs in Instagram Posts by Contemporary Tatar Fashion Brands.

The aim of this thesis is to examine how modern Tatar identity is represented through visual
and textual signs in Instagram posts by contemporary Tatar fashion brands. The study analyses
three Tatar brands (your.yool, sahtian_shoes, and lusi.brand) focusing on the relationship
between image and caption. Using qualitative semiotic analysis grounded in Stuart Hall’s
(1997) theory of representation and Roland Barthes’s concepts of denotation, connotation,
anchorage (1977), and myth (1972), the thesis examines thirty Instagram posts published in
2025, coded across three categories: cultural signifiers, modernity and hybridity, and language
and narrative framing. The research produces three findings: 1) Tatar fashion brands develop
hybrid strategies that combine traditional cultural signifiers with contemporary fashion
aesthetics, asserting cultural continuity while positioning Tatar identity as modern and visible;
2) each brand occupies a distinct semiotic position: art-historical (your.yool), institutional and
internationally oriented (sahtian_shoes), and lived-domestic and community-facing
(lusi.brand), through which Tatar identity is differently constructed for different audiences; and
3) certain representations, such as the leather mosaic as traditional Tatar craft and the urban
setting as the natural setting of Tatar dress, recur with sufficient consistency to function as
myth in Barthes’s sense, naturalising historically specific forms as self-evident facts of Tatar
culture. The contribution of the thesis is the following: 1) it adds the underexamined case of
Tatar fashion to scholarship on ethnic-minority self-representation on social media; 2) extends
Tatar identity research into the domain of contemporary digital visual culture; and 3)
demonstrates how Hall’s and Barthes’s frameworks can be operationalised together to analyse
the image-text composites through which identity is constructed on Instagram, while also
recognising that the platform can both empower and constrain the minority self-representation.

Tone in Norwegian telvised political debates. A discourse analysis of the 2021 and 2025 closing debates in Norway.

This thesis examines the development of political tone in the last televised party leader debates on NRK between 2021 and 2025. The thesis uses an interdisciplinary framework that combines Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis with Sianne Ngai’s affect theory and Douglas Py’s aesthetic understanding of tone. Tone is hard to define, and this thesis wants to contribute to the research gap in this field. The framework for the analysis consists of two different categories with three factors in each: the production (structure, host and topics) and the politicians (appearances, national framing and mood). In every category 2021 is compared to 2025. The findings suggest a shift in tone from 2021 to 2025, where the debate has changed character with a more maximalist production, characterized by faster topic changes and a dramatically increased number of interruptions that clearly signal a sharper and more aggressive tone in communication. At the same time, the politicians have moved towards a populist and animated appearance with a stronger focus on national identity and conflict, which reflects a deeper change in social reality where the boundaries between politics, entertainment and private life are blurred.

Denne oppgaven undersøker hvordan psykisk beredskap blir formidlet. Meldingen sier at hele befolkningen må bidra.

The Corrupt Relationship between Media and Politics in Mexico. The case of the film The Perfect Dictatorship by Luis Estrada.

This thesis examines how the film The Perfect Dictatorship (Bandidos, 2014) depicts the role of monopolized media in the transformation of the political environment in contemporary Mexico. The research explores the relationship between the film's narrative and documented interactions between media institutions, political actors and journalistic investigations and analyses their intertextuality according to Kristeva (2002) and Allen (2022). Utilizing the readings of the theoretical concepts in Gillian Rose (2016) and Roland Barthes (1957), the study supports a textual analysis of the film and consults on the backgrounds of Third Cinema in Solanas & Getino (1969), and outlines the formation of subjectivity (Blackman et al., 2008) by the media and cultural industry. Thereafter, an analysis of journalistic press releases, reports and investigations is conducted. Findings suggest that The Perfect Dictatorship, as a satirical synthesis of historical events, actively denounces the malpractice of media conglomerates as objective and impartial sources of information in Mexico to the date. The intertextuality analysis demonstrates the evidence of the film’s denunciatory statement as a form of objectivity, that effectually surrogates the role of Televisa as a monitor of power, shaping the political subject with capital interest bias. This thesis contributes to discussions about the democratic role of media in Mexico in the levels of journalistic press, cultural industry in film and television and political movements.

SHAPING THE SOUND:
A Study on Production Techniques and Sonic Identity in Billie Eilish’s Recordings.
Universitetet i Oslo.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
This thesis aims to answer the research question: what production techniques and vocal characteristics are used in Billie Eilish's recordings, and how do they contribute to the sonic identity and sound of her music?
Through close analysis of four songs across Billie's career: "Bad Guy," "What Was I Made For?" "Birds of a Feather," and "Bury a Friend.” The study found that Billie's sonic identity is not simply the result of a distinctive voice but is actively constructed through the interaction between vocal delivery and production techniques. The analysis identified a consistent core set of production techniques across the four tracks: close-miking, compression, spatial restraint, vocal layering, distortion, and foley-based sound design. These techniques are combined with a vocal delivery characterised by breathy softness, a narrow dynamic range, and controlled shifts between chest voice, falsetto, and near-spoken registers. Importantly, these elements do not operate as separate tools but work together to produce the specific emotional effects that define each track. The same close-miked whisper that creates psychological unease in "BAF," becomes an ironic hook in "BG" and vulnerable in "WWIMF" and polished in "BOAF."
The discussion identified three key findings. Firstly, intimacy in Billie's recordings is a constructed effect rather than a natural vocal quality achieved through close-miking, vocal layering, and spatial restraint. Second, Billie’s perceived authenticity is shaped by production decisions that complement her vocal technique, challenging the idea that authenticity depends on minimal processing. Finally, sonic identity is maintained through sonic variation: the four tracks sound noticeably different yet remain recognisable as part of the same artistic identity because they share recurring aesthetic strategies rather than a single fixed formula. These findings address a gap identified in the existing literature. While studies of vocal expression (e.g. Moore, 2012; Hawkins, 2009) and music production (Théberge, 1997; Zagorski-Thomas, 2014) have developed substantial theoretical frameworks, they have rarely examined how vocal delivery and production techniques interact in specific recordings and specific artist. By bringing these perspectives together, this thesis demonstrates that Billie's sonic identity is best understood as a repeatable method; a consistent approach to pairing vocal performance with production, rather than a coincidental collection of sonic features.

This thesis explores the rise of a lesbian ‘trend’ on TikTok through examining what visual characteristics are and have been associated with lesbian identity, how these present themselves on TikTok, and what role this online community has played in the life stories of its viewers. Through semiological analysis of a selection of TikToks, it investigates the visual characteristics that constitute this lesbian trend. Additionally, it uses the biographical narrative interpretive method (BNIM) to analyze the life stories of four avid viewers of lesbian-TikTok (#LesTok) and gain insights into how, and to what extent, this content has affected their lives, identities, and self-images.
The findings from both analyses are interpreted in light of Stuart Hall’s notion of identity as well as his theory of representation, codes, and encoding/decoding. Further, the visual analysis is based on a historical review of lesbian fashion and style from the 1920s to today.
Exemplified through the TikToks analyzed in the visual analysis, the biographical narrative analysis shows how lesbian representation on TikTok has contributed to normalization of queer life and has inspired introspection and experimentation that foster my informants’ self-acceptance. #LesTok has functioned as a lifeline, providing them with the knowledge, role models, and community they lack in their everyday lives and upbringings and offered them an escape from reality. Thus, this thesis uncovers how TikTok inspires its viewers and functions as an identity machine.

Players spend real money on digital items that alter game appearances. These cosmetics have become a massive commercial force, yet little is known about how players assign value to them. This thesis examines how Valorant and Infinity Nikki players construct and contest the cultural value of digital cosmetic collections through a multi-sited online ethnography conducted across Reddit, Discord, Twitch, and YouTube, drawing on Bourdieu's concepts of field, capital, habitus, and illusio. Empirically, the study analyses platform-specific texts, community discourse, and collective practices gathered from 120 corpus items across both game communities.
The thesis argues that cosmetic value is not inherent to items but emerges through language, norms, and community discourse on specific platforms. Analysis reveals two opposed field logics: a scarcity-and-provenance logic in Valorant, where value flows from esports events and prominent streamers around competitive prestige and rarity, and an abundance logic in Infinity Nikki, where value is built through peer discourse and aesthetic evaluation.
Theoretically, the thesis extends Bourdieu beyond direct application: because algorithmic visibility on these platforms compresses the slow socialisation his model assumes, communities can manufacture doxa about cosmetic value almost instantly rather than through prolonged negotiation, marking a temporal limit to habitus in algorithmically mediated fields. It also rereads certain forms of gaming toxicity, such as harassment over scarce skins in Valorant, as resistance that a closed scarcity economy displaces onto other players rather than as individual misconduct.

This thesis examines how video games function as virtual third places that provide emotional and social support for people experiencing loneliness, isolation, and hardship. Moving beyond the popular framing of gaming as isolating or escapist, it asks how online gaming environments become meaningful sites of belonging. Drawing on Oldenburg's concept of the third place and a symbolic interactionist framework, the study analyses nine semi-structured interviews with adult gamers in Norway through reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis develops six themes, spanning gaming as emotional refuge; as a virtual third place; as a source of belonging, recognition and real friendship; as a shield during crisis; and as a space for identity and mastery, alongside the limits and ambivalence of gaming communities. From these, the thesis advances three concepts—normative social misalignment, gentle self-empowerment, and emotionally sustainable participation—to explain how gaming communities offer accessible belonging to those whose relational needs go unmet in conventional social environments. It argues that these communities act as affective infrastructure, while attending to their tensions and exclusions.

This thesis aims to find the change of representation of diverse movie characters over time using the first and the latest James Bond movies as its objects of analysis. The goal is to understand in what ways representation of diverse characters has evolved from stereotypes to important characters with narrative agency.
The study is based on textual analysis where the movies Dr. No and No Time To Die have been analysed in order to answer the research question:
How can we see a change of representation of diversity in movies through the James Bond franchise?
The key finding of the analysis shows that representation of diversity has, in fact, had a drastic change between the two movies, by portraying female, non-white and queer characters as narratively important and possessing traits outside of their stereotypes or traditional patterns of portrayal. The study uses analysis of narrative structure and character analysis to understand the representation of diverse characters.

The portrayal of women in poverty in contemporary American film: A textual analysis of American Honey (2016) and The Florida Project (2017).

This thesis investigates how women living in poverty are represented on screen through a textual analysis of Sean Baker’s The Florida Project (2017) and Andrea Arnold’s American Honey (2016). It focuses on how both films depict the intersection of poverty and gender, and how marginalized women are constructed in relation to their social and economic environments. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Beverly Skeggs, Laura Mulvey, Stuart Hall, Angela McRobbie, and Judith Butler, the analysis explores how femininity is shaped through classed and gendered expectations, as well as through processes of representation and performativity. The thesis argues that both films present poverty not only as an economic condition, but also as something that structures the performance, perception, and judgement of femininity.

An Echo of an Echo: Martin Scorsese’s Intertextual Adaptations of Real Events in GoodFellas, Casino and The Irishman.

Establishing a conversation between adaptation and intertextuality studies, genre theory and auteurism, this thesis is an exploration of the ways in which factual events are transformed into cinematic narratives in three gangster films directed by Martin Scorsese: GoodFellas (1990), Casino (1995), The Irishman (2019). Each film is based on real people and facts, yet presents these histories through highly subjective perspectives and within recognisable gangster genre patterns, such as loyalty, status, decline and reflection. Through the close textual analysis, the study examines how Scorsese draws on memoirs, media reports, archival footage as well as reorganises this material through stylistic choices such as voice-over, tracking shots, music, performance, showing how these strategies shift the emphasis from direct historical representation to subjective, retrospective experience. The study claims that GoodFellas, Casino and The Irishman adapt factual information by filtering it through particular narrators and sensory experiences, based on lives of Henry Hill, Frank Rosenthal and Frank Sheeran respectively. Factual information is turned into scenes that are built around directly lived perspective, with the focus falling on sensory emotions, so that historical information is experienced from the inside rather than presented as a neutral fact. Additionally, materials such as media reports, television shows and hearings are closely echoed but also changed in tone, pace and order, to stylise image, legitimacy and control. Historical facts become retrospective. They appear as memories, revisited by protagonists. At the same time, the films also reuse and revise established genre themes, while creating an intertextual dialogue with earlier gangster films and with Scorsese’s own oeuvre and authorial signature, i.e. recurring actors and visual echoes. By tracing and discussing these interwoven strategies, the thesis portrays Scorsese’s gangster narratives as a case in which adaptation operates beyond the conventional understanding of the page-to-screen translation. Instead, it emerges as an interpretive, genre-based and intertextual practice that integrates real-life sources, genre conventions and a distinctive director’s style.
