Academic Interests

Hanne Hagtvedt Vik is Professor of International History at the University of Oslo. She has published widely on the history of human rights and has also worked with international indigenous peoples' rights and international aid. Her most recent articles deal with Scandinavian engagement against torture, where she and co-authors argue that legal entrepreneurs in the foreign ministries and Amnesty International's national departments and international secretariat contributed to the development of international legal principles and methods for enforcing them. She has also analyzed the internationalism of indigenous peoples and, together with Professor Anne Julie Semb, studied the dynamics between local events and developments in Norway and the establishment of ILO Convention 169 on the rights of indigenous peoples.

Vik has been committed to increasing knowledge about Sami history through the thirteen-episode radio series "The History of the Sami People" on NRK P2 where researchers talked about key developments and events from the earliest times to the present day.

Background

Vik received her MA from the University of Oslo in 2001 with a thesis on Nordic diplomacy and aid policy at the World Bank in the 1980s. She was recruited to the joint trainee program of the Norwegian government ministries before she was employed as an adviser in the Ministry of Defence. She completed her PhD at the University of Oslo in 2009 with a thesis on the emergence of an international human rights system during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. The thesis examined why the United States was a driving force, but after a few years declared that it would not accede to binding human rights agreements. The thesis follows the American legal community, inside and outside the government, from 1939 to 1954. For her dissertation she was awarded His Majesty the King's Gold Medal for the best dissertation in the humanities.

Vik was the leader of the Oslo Contemporary International History Network (together with Professor Hilde Henriksen Waage), which in the period 2010-2012 gathered internationally leading professors and early-career researchers for conferences on new trends in the field. The network contributed to the further development of the participants' research projects and discussed manuscripts for nearly seventy books and articles.

Vik is a member of the Consultative Council for The Institute for Defence Studies and a deputy member of the board of the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies. She was PhD leader in history at the UiO Department for Archaeology, Conservation and History (2019-2020) and program council leader for the multidisciplinary bachelor's program International Studies (2014-2022). Vik was a member of the committee that drafted a new work program for the Research Council of Norway's Program for Sami Research III.

In 2019, she led the establishment of the Norwegian Research School in History,  which includes nine universities and colleges, and was its leader until 2022. Since 2022, she has been the leader of the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities in Oslo and has been responsible for implementing the action plan for the PhD education.

Teaching

Since the start of her career, Vik has taught interdisciplinary and history courses in international history at bachelor's and master's level. She has also taught US history and Norwegian foreign policy history. Vik has supervised students at all levels. In 2011, she taught a graduate course in the history of human rights at Yale University with Professor Jay Winter. Since 2018 she has organized and co-taught PhD courses in philosophy of science, research ethics, methodology and dissemination for PhD candidates in history and since 2022 for all PhDs at the Faculty of Humanities.

She has been a visiting scholar at the European University of Florence (fall 2023), the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (2011-2012) and the University of Hawaii (2005-2006).
