Faglige interesser

Min forskning undersøker de karakteristiske egenskapene ved menneskespråk som muliggjør uttrykk og kommunikasjon av komplekse betydninger, med spesialisering i naturlig språks semantikk og leksikal semantikk. Jeg analyserer den interne semantiske strukturen i ord og deres samspill med syntaktiske og semantiske systemer for å skille grammatikalsk relevante betydningskomponenter fra språkspesifikke eller idiosynkratiske trekk.

Med utgangspunkt i naturlig forekommende data fra spansk, tysk, polsk og engelsk undersøker jeg hvordan autentiske data utfordrer og informerer formelle teoretiske modeller. Målet mitt er å gi både bedre empiriske og teoretiske innsikter i hvordan naturlig språk fungerer som et fleksibelt og tilpasningsdyktig system. Publikasjonene mine dekker både teoretiske spørsmål og anvendte lingvistiske problemstillinger. Siden januar 2021 har jeg hatt rollen som utdanningsleder ved Institutt for litteratur, områdestudier og europeiske språk. I dette vervet har jeg et overordnet og koordinerende ansvar for alle studieprogrammene og emnene ved instituttet samt utvikling av nye studieprogram. Siden 2025 er jeg også nesteleder ved ILOS.

Undervisning

Jeg har undervist et bredt spekter av kurs både på spansk og tysk. Disse inkluderer kommunikativ og teoretisk tilnærminger til språket. Blant annet har jeg undervist i grunnleggende grammatikk, morfologi, syntaks, pragmatikk og diskursanalyse. I tillegg har jeg også erfaring med veiledning av MA- og Ph.d.-avhandlinger.

Figurative polysemy, in which a word’s original meaning is extended into domains for which it did not originally apply, is a pervasive property of human language. Previous research using cross-linguistic (English/Spanish) data has shown that an important set of similarities and differences in patterns of figurative verb polysemy between counterpart verbs in two languages can be explained by detailed analysis of the event structures of each verb (McNally and Spalek, 2022). Here we treat a complementary case involving counterpart verbs in two languages which share the same basic event structures but differ in details of conceptual (or ‘root’) content, most importantly in the semantic restrictions on their participants. We show how, in this sort of case, the verbs will describe the same types of situations and be amenable to similar figurative extensions as long as their respective semantic restrictions can be met, but not otherwise. Teasing apart contrasts due to variation in event structural vs. conceptual content can shed light both on debates about the relation between root and grammatical content, as well as on the challenges of establishing lexical equivalences for verbs, be it for purposes of translation or for cross-linguistic comparison and the creation of lexical resources.

The debate over the relation between grammatically relevant (specifically, what we term event referential) and idiosyncratic aspects of verb meaning has produced a considerable literature. Some authors, such as Levin and Rappaport Hovav, have appealed to figurative uses of verbs as a source of data when the analysis of their literal uses has been controversial, a move that has sometimes been criticized. However, the question of whether figurative uses of verbs preserve the event referential properties of their literal counterparts and are therefore a valid source of data has not, to our knowledge, been systematically explored. We offer two detailed cross-linguistic case studies of Spanish and English verbs to provide an argument that figurative verb uses indeed are a reliable source of evidence for identifying event referential components of meaning: In each case study we find clear evidence for the preservation of these components across uses, indicating that these aspects of meaning both constrain and facilitate figurative uses of verbs.

Among the words that describe initial or final parts of events, words describing finishing stand out in a number of ways: in a language like English, there is a transitive verb which is singularly flexible regarding the type of event retrievable from the context; in a language like German, there is no verb but there is a verbal particle; in either case, there is a requirement of telicity and there is a requirement of theme incrementality. The present paper documents these facts and offers an analysis of the verbal particle.

De siste ti årene har antall studenter som tar språkstudier ved Universitet i Oslo (UiO) gått jevnt og trutt nedover. Høsten 2022 tok derfor Institutt for litteratur, områdestudier og europeiske språk (ILOS) ved UiO initiativ til å undersøke mulige årsaker til dette. Resultatet ble en rapport som beskriver situasjonen for rekruttering til ILOS sine språkstudier slik det så ut i 2023: “Fremmedspråk i krise. En utredning om europeiske fremmedspråk i høyere utdanning” (Spalek et al., 2023) . Rapporten hadde særlig søkelys på fremmedspråkene i skolen, spansk, fransk og tysk, men tok også noen blikk på engelsk, italiensk og russisk. Den tok for seg statistikk for språkstudier på UiO, fordelingen av språkstudier i høyere utdanning nasjonalt, og rekrutteringsgrunnlaget med tall fra videregående skole. Den inkluderte også en kort analyse av situasjonen i arbeidslivet, hvor et lite utvalg bedrifter ble spurt om deres behov for fremmedspråkkompetanse og mulighetene for å rekruttere ansatte med denne spesifikke kompetansen. I denne artikkelen presenterer vi en oversikt over funnene i rapporten, samt noen av tiltakene som har blitt iverksatt på UiO i etterkant. Vårt mål er å spre kunnskap og bidra til å forbedre situasjonen som ble identifisert gjennom rapportarbeidet.

This cumulative dissertation explores resources for structurally aligning with projected continuation in interactional data in Norwegian and in Peninsular Spanish, through a methodological-theoretical process positioned within Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics (CA/IL), with a comparative aim akin to approaches combining CA/IL with Linguistic Anthropology and Pragmatic Typology. Its first article, published in a special issue on Conversation Analysis for Norwegian Journal of Linguistics (2023), teases out m᷉m – a disyllabic bilabial-nasal particle pronounced with the specific high-low-high wave form of the East Norwegian second tonal accent. Although almost ubiquitous in interactional data in Norwegian, m᷉m had so far remained largely underexamined and not distinguished in transcription from the monosyllabic m or disyllabic mhm. While the latter mhm is forefronted in general (English based) literature as a classic ‘continuer’ and key resource for achieving structural alignment, this first article shows it to be relatively rare in Norwegian data, and preliminarily analyzes its social actions as often distinct from those done by m᷉m. The dissertation’s second article, accepted for publication in Interactional Linguistics, turns to data in Peninsular Spanish, and indicates vocal continuers of any form to be rare in a pool of more than 364 big packages, the vast majority of which thereby achieve structural alignment without them. In a collection of fifteen K+ storytellings, drawn from the aforementioned pool, I demonstrate the following, largely representative pattern: When tellers project continuation (pragmatically, semantically, prosodically, syntactically, gesturally), recipients are silent and embodiedly still, steadily gazing at teller (cf. Rossano, 2009). One of the rare occasions when vocal continuers are employed in the data from Peninsular Spanish, is in a multimodally restricted participation framework, which, together with classic literature being based on data from phone calls, invites a multimodal reinterrogation of the roles and frequencies of vocal continuers, perhaps also in English. Together with the third and parallel article on Norwegian, however, structural alignment, although a likely universal relational principle, is indicated as language-/culture-specifically divergently routinized (as suggested in other terms by Günthner, 1993, Clancy et al., 1996, and Fant, 1989, 2006). This third article of the dissertation, currently under revision for Interactional Linguistics, analyzes exemplars from a collection of fourteen tellings representative of a wider practice in Norwegian of structurally aligning with projected continuation by actively yielding the floor predominantly through vocal continuers such as m᷉m, that are precisely timed not only to boundaries of turn-constructional units, but to rhythmic patterns projected by the floor-holding speaker (cf. Ogden, 2024). The divergent practices for structural alignment that this dissertation demonstrates could have implications for second language, cross- and intercultural intersubjectivity. Participants will still interactionally achieve multi-unit-turns in moment-to-moment, action-by-action, mutual (and multi-modal) monitoring and recipient design, where they may adapt online. However, recognizing that likely universal relational principles such as structural alignment can be divergently, language-/culture-specifically routinized may be of assistance when monitoring our (cross-cultural) recipient’s (possibly unexpected) behavior and designing our actions to the principles we ascribe to it.

Denne rapporten tar for seg de europeiske fremmedspråkenes stilling i det norske utdanningssystem og arbeidsliv, sett fra ILOS sin posisjon i systemet. Første delen av rapporten viser en oversikt over studentmassen ved ILOS og tallene for søkere, gjennomføring og frafall ved instituttet. Det er en tydelig tendens til lav gjennomføring på gradsnivå, men høy gjennomføring på emnenivå. En kartlegging av studentgruppen ved ILOS viser en motivert studentgruppe, men med en lav grad av gjennomføring. Spørsmålet stilles om det er en sammenheng mellom forkunnskaper og frafall, men undersøkelsene som er gjort så langt gir ikke tilstrekkelig svar på dette. Studier i fremmedspråk finnes ved en rekke andre universiteter og høyskoler i landet, og ILOS har mange «konkurrenter» som kjemper om de samme studentene. Flere studiesteder har rettet seg særlig inn mot lærerutdanning og videreutdanning av lærere i skolen, og noen studiesteder tilbyr fremmedspråk som en integrert del av en grad. I skolen ser man i 2022 den laveste søkningen til fordypning i fremmedspråk siden 2013. Det er få skoler som tilbyr fordypningsfaget på nivå III og dette kan ha en påvirkning på søkertallene til språkstudier i høyere utdanning. Til tross for at man vet at språkkompetanse tar lang tid å tilegne seg, har alle forsøk med tidligere start for språklæring i norsk skole strandet. Når man ser på fremmedspråkenes posisjon i norske offentlige dokumenter vises en dobbel kommunikasjon, der man på den ene siden løfter fram behovet for kunnskap om fremmedspråk som sentralt for internasjonalt samarbeid og god samhandling i Europa, mens man på den andre siden i dokumenter som omhandler skoleverket ønsker å senke antallet timer brukt på undervisning i fremmedspråk. Det fremstår som at ulike deler av norsk offentlig sektor har ulike oppfatninger av fremmedspråkenes relevans. Utenfor Norge har man sett sviktende søkertall til fremmedspråkstudier både i Danmark, Sverige og Storbritannia. I disse landene har imidlertid myndighetene eller sentrale aktører i utdanningssektoren selv tatt et grep for å forsøke å endre på situasjonen. I arbeidslivsundersøkelser som er gjort ser man at det er stort behov for arbeidstakere med god språkkompetanse i både offentlig og privat sektor. Det ligger et paradoks her i at arbeidsgivere ikke utlyser stillinger der språkkompetanse er et krav, fordi deres erfaringer tilsier at kandidatene da uteblir. Behovet ligger ofte i en dobbelkompetanse og språkkompetansen blir nedprioritert til fordel for annen nødvendig kompetanse. I noen tilfeller rekrutterer man morsmålsbrukere i europeiske språk for å dekke nødvendige behov. Denne mangelen på språkkompetanse i både næringsliv- og byråkrati har et potensiale til å påvirke økonomien og norsk innflytelse internasjonalt i negativ retning. En bedre kartlegging på dette området vil være interessant. Siste del av rapporten inneholder forslag til tiltak for ILOS, for å øke rekrutteringen til og gjennomføringen av språkstudier ved instituttet for de neste 10 årene. Forslagene baserer seg i hovedsak på funnene i denne rapporten, samtidig som de tar hensyn til overordnede utviklingsprosesser som foregår på Det humanistiske fakultetet, UiO, i samme periode.
