About the group

There has been only limited research on the provenance of collectables from Asian countries at Norwegian museums – that is, the documented history of ownership, custody, and location of an artwork from its creation to the present day. Recent political debates on the restitution of artifacts make such research necessary and urgent.

The group consists of experts on Asian art and material culture at local and international museums, an auction house, a cultural heritage association, and the University of Oslo. They come from the fields of Art History, Museology, Law, Anthropology, and Area Studies and study China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, and other places across Asia.

Regular meetings will be held to develop funding applications for an international workshop, grant proposals, internship possibilities, and teaching opportunities.

Collaborators

The project is institutionally based at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas (IFIKK), but is a collaboration between IFIKK, the Department of Culture, Religion, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (IKOS), and the Museum of Cultural History (KHM).
