Børnevennen (1838–1839) and Billed-Magazin for Børn (1838–1839) were early, illustrated magazines aimed at child readers in Denmark and Norway respectively, modelled on similar publications in France, Germany and Great Britain. The two children’s magazines provide fruitful vantage points from where we can explore periodicals as collections, and their role in collecting, producing and circulating cultural imagery. As ephemeral and affordable forms of print, the magazines disseminated verbal and visual materials in various genres and covered a wide range of topics, mostly reproducing imported materials. Although they were published in national contexts, then, the magazines were highly transnational in both form and content. This chapter investigates the collection, production and circulation of northern knowledge and imagery in the two periodicals, with a focus on ethnographic texts and images portraying the Inuit and the Sámi. In particular, the chapter investigates if and how these ethnographic materials form part of the notion of Denmark and Norway as distinctly northern nations.

The article investigates the circulation of objects from the Salomon A. Andrée expedition (1897), examining the reproduction and recontextualization of written records in four Swedish works: Med Örnen mot polen (1930), Per Olof Sundman’s documentary novel Ingenjör Andrées luftfärd (1967), and his compi-lation Ingen fruktan, inget hopp (1968), and Bea Uusma’s Expeditionen (2013). The article approaches these writings through the prism of collecting, exhibiting, and curating, as part of the extended archive of the Andrée expedition, and argues for an understanding of books as important in circulating objects to a reading audience in ways that shape the expedition’s afterlife.

The article explores how Richard Harrington’s travelogue The Face of the Arctic (1952) responds to and represents the changing Canadian Arctic at the beginning of the Cold War, with a focus on Harrington’s famous photographs of the Padlei famine that were essential in changing the public’s image of the region at the time. Whereas scholars so far have downplayed the complexity of these photographs, this study offers a rereading of the Padleimiut photographs that draws on W. J. T. Mitchell’s concept of imagetext. The analysis of these photographs in relation to the text they appear alongside, the article argues, facilitates a more dynamic understanding of the images and their meaning. As such, the present study exemplifies how Arctic images are dependent on their specific contexts and on contextualizing interpretations.

Maurits Hansen’s short story “Lille Alvilde” (Little Alvilde, 1829), about a small girl’s idyllic encounter with a bear, is considered a Norwegian classic. Since it was first published, it has been reprinted numerous times in several Norwegian publications. Its extensive publishing history made it available to a large readership and ensured its canonization. Moreover, Hansen’s story was distributed abroad, and translated versions were printed in England and the United States. In this chapter, we present the journey of “Lille Alvilde”, from Norway to England and the United States, and back again. By tracing the transnational publishing and translation history of the original text into the different English versions, we unpack the distribution, translation, and transformation of Hansen’s canonized story.

Introduction: In their efforts to reach out to teenagers, libraries facilitate different literary activities where youth come together, socialize and interact. In what ways do these practices contribute to the building of literary and social communities among the participating teenagers and to a broadened understanding of the concepts of libraries? Method and Analysis: This paper examines three different cases of participatory mediation activities in Norwegian libraries: a podcast, a voluntary reading group and a shared reading activity. The method used is qualitative interviews, and the findings are discussed in relation to theories on the social and participatory dimensions of cultural institutions and to a model from library and information theory. Results: In the cases presented, the libraries facilitated the activities as part of their strategies. The study sheds light on how the mediation practices in question contribute to fostering literary and social communities among the participating teenagers. Conclusion: The present study demonstrates possible ways of expanding the understanding of what a library means to young people in a contemporary context.

In the spring and summer of 1839, the young Frenchwoman Léonie d’Aunet (1820–79) made her way from Paris through the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, before finally joining the corvette of the La Recherche expedition on its route from Hammerfest in northern Norway to the wild, remote island of Spitsbergen in the High Arctic. In her later account of this journey, entitled Voyage d’une femme au Spitzberg (1854), she writes: “L’intérêt de mon récit croitra à mesure que je m’avancerai sous les latitudes élevées de notre vielle Europe; arrivée là, j’aurai, à défaut d’autre, le mérite de l’originalité, étant la seule femme qui ait jamais entrepris un semblable voyage”. Indeed, d’Aunet’s account is considered among the very first descriptions of northern Scandinavia and Spitsbergen written by a woman, and d’Aunet’s exceptionality is echoed in both the French and Norwegian reception of the text. In what follows, I present some important aspects of Voyage d’une femme au Spitzberg before I go on to discuss the circumstances of, and changes in, the Norwegian translation of d’Aunet’s text and their effects on the portrayal of the Nordic region.

This article examines the staging of children as consumers in the first Danish children’s magazine Ungdommens Ven (1770). By investigating texts that portray children and their use of pocket money, with an emphasis on texts in which this use is directly linked to the purchasing of the magazine itself, the article argues that the staging of children as consumers may be seen in the context of children’s increasingly important role in the book market and print culture during the second half of the 18th century. Through a discussion of how children appear as readers, consumers, and subscribers in the magazine, the article demonstrates how Ungdommens Ven is educative in at least two interwoven ways. First, by instructing the readers in how to spend one’s money wisely, and second, by inculcating the knowledge of how to be magazine readers as well as purchasers, initiating children into the economic aspects of the specific publication and into consumer culture more generally. Taking one of the early children’s magazines in Denmark as its point of departure, the article identifies some significant changes in print and consumer culture before the emergence of a mass market, accentuating the role of children and their magazines in these developments.

The Arctic is an imagined space as much as a geographical place; our ideas and understanding of the region are based both in the fictional and the factual. Aritha van Herk’s Places Far From Ellesmere (1990) combines multiple genres in its experimental rendering of the author’s journey to the Canadian north, thus touching upon the issues of genre and the boundaries, or rather the lack of such boundaries, between the fictional and the factual in the literature of the Arctic. The article examines how van Herk’s text contests the genre conventions of exploration narratives through the traveller’s self-representation and by making Anna Karenina a key text in the account of her journey. These features, the article argues, are decisive to van Herk’s feminist critique of Tolstoy’s novel, as well as of exploration writing on the Arctic generally, and also point to the recurring issue of fact and fiction in the literature of the Arctic.

We all have stories of travel, and these narratives reveal how we define ourselves and how we understand others. The fourteen contributors to this book take “travel writing”, “travel account” and “travelogue” as synonyms of the term “travel narrative”. While the travel narratives discussed in this volume were written during, and after, journeys undertaken at different points in time, they are all related to the Nordic region: travels to, from and within the Nordics, by both Nordic and non-Nordic travellers. As the authors show, paintings, illustrations and objects such as souvenirs also contribute to our understanding of travels to, from and within the Nordic countries. This range of travellers and travel experiences offers strikingly different perspectives on the Nordic region, which in turn allows for a comparative and critical approach. The element of comparison is crucial here; it shows not only how dissimilar perceptions of the Nordic are but also how they have changed over time. One concluding point made in the book is that if Nordic travels have been associated with a privileged mobility unavailable to noncitizens and refugees, travellers from the Nordic countries will be even more troubled by this implicit reference as climate changes accelerate. Presenting Nordic travels as multi-dimensional and dynamic, the collection owes its inception to the UiO:Nordic research initiative.

In her travelogue Return to the Future (1942, Norwegian title: Tilbake til fremtiden), Sigrid Undset recounts her escape from Norway in April 1940 and her journey across Sweden, the Soviet Union and Japan to the United States, where she remained her return to Norway in May 1945. The travelogue was originally written in Norwegian while Undset was exiled in the United States, but it first appeared in English translation in 1942; later that year it was published in Portuguese, followed by Swedish and Danish editions in 1943 and German, French and Icelandic editions in 1944. Aschehoug intended to publish a Norwegian edition in December 1945, but the plan was abandoned when the Soviet embassy, displeased with Undset’s depiction of the Soviet Union, threatened to boycott Norwegian publishers. The book therefore remained unavailable in Norway until the fall of 1949, even though the final chapter was published in Samtiden in 1946. From 1942 onward, the Norwegian reception was shaped by resistance to National Socialism, by both Communism and anti Communism and by anti Catholicism – ideological positions that also drew on Undset’s public role during the interwar years. In this paper I examine how these positions are manifested in the complex reception of Undset’s travelogue and argue that Return to the Future both illustrates Undset’s contested status and exposes the political, religious and gendered rhetorics that shaped the Norwegian cultural sphere during and after the Second World War.

Reisende tekster: Norden for norsk-amerikanske lesere.

Shaped by the North, shaping the North: English-Canadian Travel Writing in the 1950s.

How do travel writers respond to the changing Canadian North at the beginning of the Cold War? This dissertation explores the representation of the North in the 1950s, when there was an increasing awareness of the region’s geopolitical and economic role, through a contextual, rhetorical, and material reading of five English-Canadian travel books: Pierre Berton’s The Mysterious North (1956); Richard Harrington’s The Face of the Arctic (1952); Farley Mowat’s People of the Deer (1952) and The Desperate People (1959); and Doug Wilkinson’s Land of the Long Day (1955). The study investigates how the travelling and writing of these four men were enabled and influenced by economic, political, and practical conditions as well as by central actors in the North. Moreover, these travel books had a significant impact on the public debate in Canada, and contributed to a shift in the idea of the North: from a barren wilderness to an indigenous homeland of resources and strategic importance, which in turn had implications for the area’s symbolic meaning to Canadian national identity. The dissertation contributes to the field of Canadian studies by shedding light on the discourse – as text, image, and practice – about the Canadian North with a basis in a specific genre within a specific time period. Also, it adds to the field of travel writing studies by arguing for an approach that considers the complex processes that shape the production of travel writing, paratextual components such as images and maps that are central to its representation, and the ways in which the genre has an impact on the understanding of places, peoples, and cultures.
