Valgplattform. Peter Edwards, Professor, Institutt for musikkvitenskap

English:

One of the most important things the Faculty of Humanities does is educate graduates to see the world in new ways. The humanities help us uncover the assumptions behind what we take for granted and imagine possibilities beyond those built into today’s institutions, technologies and working life. The Faculty should not only train graduates for pre-defined jobs. We should also educate people who can question and change working life and society for the better.

Artificial intelligence is a good example. We need to understand the data, interests and views that shape it; the kinds of knowledge it privileges; and the effects it has on language, work, education and the public sphere. The humanities must therefore play a key role in shaping how AI is used, regulated and developed – by and for people.

The breadth of the Faculty’s research and teaching portfolio is a major strength and need not come at the expense of academic depth. There is significant potential in collaborating across disciplines and thinking more flexibly, so that staff can connect their research and teaching as closely as possible. This can bring inspiration and motivation to both. A strong Faculty of Humanities needs not only large and visible academic environments, but also intellectual diversity, long-term thinking and room for the unexpected.

As resources become more limited, we need to monitor the Faculty’s funding allocation model and adjust it where needed. At the same time, the model can make it easier to collaborate across disciplines and explore new approaches.

I have previously served as Head of Department (2017–2020), and I have experience as Head of Studies and Head of Research at the Department of Musicology. I also previously represented the fixed-term academic staff on the Faculty Board. Through these roles, I have gained considerable first-hand experience of the Faculty’s organisation, personnel management, and the practical realities of research and teaching. As a representative for the permanent academic staff, I will work to promote academic freedoms, favourable and predictable conditions for teaching and research, and support university policies that take the role of the humanities in society seriously.
