Seminar Room 4 Documentation

Seminar Room 4 (room 118) is IMV's largest seminar room and lecturing hall, capable of accommodating large classes, seminars, and hybrid settings. This page presents documentation of the equipment and guides on how to use it.

Overview

Seminar Room 4 is a modular teaching facility designed to host large classes, workshops and seminars at IMV. The technology in the room consists of a fairly standard USB-C-based AV system for teaching, with a projector, screen, and wall-mounted B&W HiFi speakers. However, the system is further extended with an additional USB-C connection point and two wall-mounted TVs on the long side. This opens up new possibilities to arrange the room for teaching and other events.

The tech in Sem4 also features an integrated lavalier microphone and ceiling speakers for speech enhancement, Neckloops for hearing aids, as well as a PTZ web camera for video. The microphone and Logitech PTZ camera are both accessible as media sources through the USB-C connection, so you can easily use Zoom or other forms of telecommunication.

Besides the tech, there is a large Yamaha grand piano in the room, and blackboards with note engravings at both ends.

Normal Teaching with Laptop on Screen and Sound from B&W Wall-mounted Speakers

All operations begin with the user connecting his/her laptop to the AV-system via a USB-C cable. There are two USB-C connection points in the room, one on the teaching desk and one between the two wall-mounted TVs along the long wall. The USB-C connections are identical and control the exact same things; you get your laptop display on the projector and TV screens, and you can play sound from the B&W HiFi speakers and ceiling speakers.

usb-c connection points
There are two USB-C connection points in Sem4 for accessing the AV system.

When connected through the USB-C, the TVs and projector will display the same image and are therefore to be treated as one screen. However, it's possible to use a single TV screen via a dedicated HDMI cable.

For sound, it's recommended to use the wall-mounted B&W HiFi speakers. Connect the USB-C cable to your laptop and choose the "Dante I/O" sound source. Then, adjust the volume through the big knob on the Sony amplifier in the AV rack. On the Sony amplifier, make sure that the source choice (kildevelger) is set to "laptop". There is also a mini-jack cable for playing analog sound directly to the B&W speakers. For this to work, simply flip the source choice (kildevelger) to the appropriate source.

The remote controls for the projector, TVs and PTZ camera are located on top of the AV rack. Next to the rack is also a switch for lowering and raising the motor project screen.

Speech Enhancements with Wireless Microphone and Neckloop Hearing Aids

Since Sem 4 is a quite oblong room, we installed a wireless microphone that can be used for basic speech enhancement while teaching. The wireless microphone (Sennheiser) sits on top of the AV rack and is directly connected to eight integrated ceiling speakers in the room via the microphone receiver that sits inside the AV rack.

Use the wireless microphone for speech enhancement.

To use the Sennheiser wireless microphone, simply remove it from its charging position and turn it on. Make sure that the receiver in the AV rack is also turned on. Sound should then automatically come from the ceiling speakers. It's possible to adjust the microphone output level on the receiver. For this, navigate to the Audio Output settings.

Sem 4 has two Roger Neckloop devices for hearing aids to comply with UiO's standard for universal design and student support. The Neckloops are located behind the AV rack and should be paired with the Wallpilot devices that are mounted next to the doors. When the Neckloop system is activated, the Sennheiser wireless microphone will broadcast sound to the hearing aids. It's important that the Neckloops are fully charged at any given time. So after they are used, make sure they are set to charge again.

The Neckloop and Wallpilots are for hearing aids. They are connected to signal from the Sennheiser wireless microphone.

How to Use Zoom and Manage Hybrid Teaching Scenarios

Sem 4 is fully equipped and routed to support hybrid teaching and telecommunication. This procedure is actually the exact same as the normal teaching procedure, not complicated at all. The Sennheiser microphone and wall-mounted Logitech PTZ camera are both routed so they are available as media sources through both the USB-C connection points.

So:

  1. Connect the USB-C cable to your laptop and get your screen on the projector/Tvs.
  2. Open Zoom or another telecommunication software (Teams, Google Meet, etc.)
  3. Open settings and choose "Dante I/O" as the audio input and output source. Audio from the Sennheiser microphone will then pass to the remote users, and audio from the remote users will pass to the B&W speakers. The Sennheiser microphone will also pass to the local ceiling speakers in the room.
  4. Choose the "PTZ camera" as the video source. Then, make sure the Zoom window is visible and displayed on the local projector and/or TV screens.
